Anyone watch the Skins Game? I didn't. But I briefly caught a glimpse of play on the par 3 15th hole: an island green with a biarritz concept. And this on a course that otherwise appears to be very new, and modern.   Anyone know who the architect was?Who's building biarritz-style greens other than Doak, DeVries, and the few other moderns I've seen do it?

Jeff--I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I watched most of the skins game these two days.  I never heard them netion the architect -- it was almost as though they were going out of their way not to do so.  I couldn't tell about the island green hole.  I'm not sure it was a real Biarritz as the front of the green seemed to be much lower than the back part -- perhaps it was just a three-level job with a little more undulation in the middle.  Or maybe my TV needs adjusting.Did you notice the other one-shotter on the second nine -- it seemed like a vague attempt at a Redan.

John ("Did you notice the other one-shotter on the second nine -- it seemed like a vague attempt at a Redan."I agree John, it looked like about one half of a pretty good Redan green - right side looked a little weird - yardage worked also  I was listening for who the architect was also but never heard a thing - I have a son in law who works for ABC Sports and I'll see if he can call and find out who built the course
If a player insists on playing his maximum power on his tee-shot, it is not the architect's intention to allow him an overly wide target to hit to but rather should be allowed this privilege of maximum power except under conditions of exceptional skill.

Actually Bill, my favorites in SoCal are George Thomas and some other guy named MacKenzie who designed a course called the Valley Club and did a remodel that was torn to shreds by the good folks of Redlands CC.For modern day commercial work, Curley and Schmidt do an adequate job design wise, but lets face it, it's not C&C or Renaissance.Curley and Schmidt did Landmark under the guise of Landmark Golf Design.  They used to say they designed the course on the Landmark website, but now they have changed that completely. www.landmarkgolf.com
