Please use this post as a suggestion box for questions that you would like to see posed to future interviewees.

This might only apply to architects who you interview, but I wish you would ask them those thing that have "inspired" them. For instance, it could be the first time they played a MacKenzie course, or at St. Andrews, or maybe even it was reading a book like Golf Atlas. I remember becoming intrigued by golf course design after I first played Harbour Town in the late 1970s.

Ran,Why don't you ask George Bahto the first 18 of the 6,000 questions you indicated you'd like to ask him.  For the Raynor fans in the audience, this would be a real treat, as no one on the planet knows more about Macdonald and Raynor than George (he tells me his book is now going to be released as 2 books-too much information for one book).

Believe me, we would be delighted to do an interview with the world's leading expert on Raynor/Macdonald.

To an architect:1) If you could take an architectural mulligan for one hole that you have designed where would it be? 2) Why and what would you change?3) If my son/daughter wanted to be a golf architect what should they do?

In answer to question #3, "if my son/daughter wanted to be an architect, what should they do?"     For a "design" education (as distinguished from "architect") spend a few days walking around a piece of raw land with Coore and crenshaw!

As to "African," you'll have to specify:
Hirundo domicella ("West African Swallow")
Hirundo spilodera ("South African Cave Swallow")

Before you proceed, you must know that, unlike the European Swallow, kinematic data on either Hirundo domicella or Hirundo spilodera are hard to come by.

But if you indeed are a king this should be no problem, for it's the sort of thing kings need to know.

Mark - what's hilarious is the HUGE amount of actual scientific work done on this question.  Do a yahoo or google search on exactly those words:

what is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow

and it is COMICAL the volume of data you'll get....

Thus there are a lot of kings out there!

Okay, then, I want to change my question.

My new question:

What is the capital of Assyria?

That's why we have to ask an architect.  Jeff Brauer, I bet he knows.

Concur.  But I also expect at least 11 pages debating the nuances.

Well, then, we'll have to broaden the question to include these swallows:
CCC swallow
Wie Michelle swallow (had to work through a few permutations there)
Wilson's Macdonald swallow
Jans swallow

How do firms or achitects compete with other firms on price when design solutions may vary?
How do they help clients or prospects understand or rationalize project cost?
Discuss projects that were turned down and why.
Discuss projects that were coveted but lost and why.

When is the design of a hole finally concluded upon and the mind left to rest?

 Do they fear repeating designs?

How do they restrain themselves from overworking the land to be a golf hole?

Are they compelled to create ranked golf holes/courses?

What area of architecture do they feel they need to work on?

Does rough/wasteland get enough consideration in design?

What can we do to promote the playing of golf to new golfers?

Will we see any more world class golf courses be built below 6500 yard length.

What new and popular trends will become rote and insipid practices soon?

Who are they still learning from?

Why is golf design their chosen profession?

Is it hard to get a date wearing a red plaid  jacket?
Or is it a babe magnet?

Is Augusta over-tinkered with or is it just a reflection of the times and technology or ... ?

Would they be interested in designing another type of sporting field?  Frisbee golf?  Baseball stadium? Wildlife Park? etc.

What are some favorite golf books?

Did you have an inspiration for getting in the GCA business?

I'd love to see how you got on with Donald Steel given that he has worked on so many courses that you/we love.
