Name the Golf Course
« on: April 08, 2003, 01:33:23 PM »
Just to add a little levity to the discussion board, particularly in light of the passionate debates regarding course rankings, I am now accepting suggestions for the name of the golf course I am "designing" in Bishop, Georgia.

Don't get too excited.  It's a course that will never be developed.  It's simply a class project at UGA.

Preliminary Candiate:

HOOTIE C.C.
HUCKABY HILLS G.C.

Carlyle

P.S. A golf course was actually developed on the site by Mike Young--Lane Creek Golf Club.

The Mitre(Miter)Club. A liturgical head-dress worn by bishops and abbots.

Oh man Carlyle, Huckaby Hills would be a strange place indeed.  ;)

But funny you should ask this, we had a thread way back where people stated what they'd want in their perfect club and one of the best of these was Papazian Hills, named after our friend Gib.

I am definitely not vain enough to want a course named after me.  My Dad deserves it though!

That being said, I like Mr. Huntley's suggestion.  Given it is in Bishop, it does need the liturgical bent.

How about The Cardinal Club?  I know, weak, but they are the chief bishops...   :)

Huckaby Hills routing

Naming it Huckaby Hills may introduce an engineering dilemma as far as creating the genuine Huckaby experience.

How do you design a course to be entirely downhill after the first hole?   ;D

;D ;D ;D

Jeez Carlyle, how did you come to know me so well after one golf round and a few beers?

That had me laughing out loud without a doubt.

I guess I am kinda optomistic to a pollyana extent when it comes to this silly game....  ;)

That would be a challenge, at any rate.  Hmmmm... didn't Nicklaus design at least a few courses like this, given his favoring of the downhill over the uphill?

Couple of ideas:

Given the local Bishop history:

Bishop is named for William Henry Bishop, who was born in Oconee County, Georgia, and farmed there until the outbreak of the Civil War. He immediately enlisted in Cobb's Legion -- a unit commanded by General T.R. Cobb of Athens. The Georgia contingent had its first battle at Antietam in Maryland in which it made an heroic stand in fending off Union forces, and preserving Confederate positions.

As a sergeant, Bishop was at Gettysburg. In the Battle of the Wheatfield, he was wounded in the foot. Since the wound left him ambulatory, he worked as an orderly during his convalescence at the front. He survived until War's end and walked home to Oconee County, Georgia. The railroad had a watering stop across the road from his farm, so his wife generated a small business selling biscuits and other minor food items to passengers. As a result a small town developed there. The original Bishop home was destroyed by fire during the 1980s.

His grand son, George Norman Bishop, was later a Professor at the nearby University of Georgia, and authored a definitive book on tree identification. Honored as a distinguished professor of dendrology, the University of Georgia Arboretum bears his name today.

Idea Set one:

Sergeant's Bridge (nod to Mr. Bishop and his role at Antietem)

Water Stop Golf Club

Given proximity to Athens:

Parthenon Club

Phidias Fields

Ictinus

Jim:

Do you have any idea how far away the railroad water stop was from the current Lane Creek Golf Club?

I like Mikes line of thinking, only with a nod to Mel Brooks' "History of the World":

Pawn jumps Queen
Rook jumps Queen
Knight jumps Queen

I won't finish... ;D

Carlyle,

Lane Creek Golf Club
Near 23670 Cold Springs Road

Phone: 706-769-6699

Head Pro: David McGowan
Supt.: Sean Sullivan

Give 'em a call or check against mapquest for rail routing.

Bishop, GA website says the town is only a little over 2 square km so it must be somewhat close.

Joe,

"Its good to be the king!"

Cheers!

There's a small town in England, by the name of Chatwell Heath.

I've always thought Chatwell Heath GC had a nice ring to it...
