Best Golf Hole You Saw This Year
« on: December 18, 2003, 04:02:52 PM »
Since the year is winding down and we have discussed courses we have played.  I would be curious as to what your favorite new hole that you saw this year.

Mine would be the 3rd at Sand Hills.  Absolute perfection in my eyes.

#9 at Turnberry or #14 at Monterey Peninsula when the sun was setting.  Setting and beauty trumped architecture no both accounts.

My favorite has to be the 6th hole at WildHorse.  This is the hole that doesn't have a single bunker on it and doesn't need one.  Absolute perfection.  It just flows with the land beutifully and was my favorite this year.

Modern-All 18 holes at Friars Head
Classic-#1 at NGLA brings tears to my eyes.
-#18 may be my favorite hole of all time.

#15 at Cypress Point was the best that I saw, truely inspiring, the best that I played, #9 at Sutton Bay. Great setting, beautiful view, and a strategic hole that can really bit if you get a little greedy.

The Sixteenth at Garden City.

The perfect little pond makes the hole.

The best new hole that I played was the par 4 15th at World Woods Pine Barrens (Brooksville, FL) course. The 2nd best new hole was the par 4 5th hole at Belleair CC (Clearwater, FL).

The absolute best holes I played this year were Bethpage Black #1-18!

Has to be the 9th at RCD.  Just standing up there and thinking I am only half way through 18 and reflecting on the previous 8 holes sends shivers down your spine.

Modern:

Probably #15 Inniscrone over #4 Kinloch, #13 Rustic Canyon, #9 TPC@Wakefield Plantation, #15 French Creek, #4 Royal New Kent (all have a common feature - central hazards), #11 Barona Creek.

Classic:

#3 Olympia Fields (North)

If I went back a full year (365 days), 12/23/2002, would include Cypress Point, and almost every hole would top this list.

Played - I really loved The Rawls Course, holes 4-8, with 4 or 7 being my favorite. Probably 7.

Saw - Loved all the holes at Oakmont. 1-3 were awesome, 6, 8, unbelievable, 12 & 17 unreal, but I think I liked 10 the best. Tough call between 10 & 12, though. Would've really loved 8 if Forrest's friend hadn't butchered it. (JUST KIDDING)

I can't pick only one, so...

-The yet to be played 1st, 8th, 9th, 12th and 13th at Mike DeVries' new Greywalls course at Marquette G&CC, Upper Peninsula, Michigan; scheduled to open late summer 2004.

-The 2nd, 7th, 11th, 13th, 15th, 17th and 18th at Blackhawk GC (Rod Whitman) in suburban Edmonton, Alta.

-And I have to second Tommy Naccarato's nomination of all 18 holes at Friar's Head. A legendary piece of work from Coore, Crenshaw and company, indeed.

This was a shoo-in:

#18 at Oak Hill's East Course, during the PGA, final round, final game, approach shot to the green. Was there a better shot this year?

(PS -- When Huckaby gets around to responding to this after yet another sojourn on the Clorox watch spent rating a CCFAD in NorCal  ;D, the Vegas line on holes mentioned is 5 1/2.)

I'll take the over.  (smiley, smiley...)

Erich Jr.,
I would say the 5th at Sankaty Head is my choice although I found it hard to single out just one from the large number of good holes at this course.

New Hole:
15th at French Creek, a perfect golf hole, and short too.

Old:
10th at Lehigh impressed the hell out of me for its approach options.
