I live a few blocks from the Empire State Building, so NY is a winner for me. Without traffic, these are my favorite courses within one hour - no order & driving time sans traffic.

- Baltusrol (Lower) - 40 mins
- Somerset Hills - just under 1 hour
- Piping Rock - 50 mins
- Winged Foot (West) - 40 mins
- The Creek - 55 mins

Realistically, with traffic these are the best courses within 1 hour drive of Empire State Building.
- Quaker
- Winged Foot (West)
- Sleepy
- Garden City
- Ridgewood (NJ)

With traffic on a Friday afternoon, realistically speaking the only possibility is the driving range at Chelsea Piers.

Saturday morning traffic, it's hard to see anything within an hour of NYC competing with PV or Merion unless we have Nigel Mansell driving us - then Shinnecock and NGLA pop into the equation and it's not so hard (it's about 86 miles so it is arguably doable). Top 5 that I've played that really are an hour from the Empire State Building would be WFW, the Creek, WFE, Baltusrol Upper, Bayonne. Near Philly I'd only have PV, Merion, Galloway, ACCC, and Twisted Dune and those last three are tight up against the hour mark. I think it would be 3-2 to NYC of the places I have played.

Michael,
Traffic on Fridays suck, but it's mostly heading to NJ or Long Island. A lot of companies in NYC have summer Fridays - 1/2 days. You can leave the office around 11:30, take West Side HWY then Cross County and be on the 1st tee at WF/ Quaker/ Wykagyl/etc before 1:15.

For the guys with money, they'd take a helicopter or seaplane from West Side to Hamptons (<35 mins) and tee off around 1:00 at Shinny, NGLA, etc...

Bayonne runs a ferry to/from Lower Man., allows you avoid traffic.

NY beats Philly with room to spare.

And for the record Philly's top 3 is, and will always be, Pine Valley; Merion (East); and Aronimink ;D . Spots 4 and 5 are up for grabs among Huntington Valley, Phila. Cricket (Wissahickon), and Rolling Green.

I'll weigh in on this one sometime in 2026 or 27.

Wayne , how can NY win easily when Philly wins two against anyone , including Shinny and NGLA even if they are allowed to play ….so it comes down to 3,4,5 ….you sure that’s a rout for NYC?

I agree. Philly top 2 can't be topped. But, WFW, Garden City, Somerset Hills... or Baltusrol or Creek or Piping Rock or Sleepy or Quaker or Ridgewood > Aronimink, Cricket, HV, or Rolling Green. Might not be a rout, but they're putting in the bench warmers for some minutes at the end of the game!

And, I'm from Philly.

NYC Metro Area
Population 20.1 million people
GDP - $2.3 trillion

Philadelphia Area
Population 6.2 million people
GDP $.5 trillion

Shouldn’t we be comparing their 15 best courses to our 5 best?

Tried to "fix" this for Philly by limiting it to FIVE   .....  not worried about the bench so let's play

Philly two up after PV and Merion..and Shinnecock and NGLA are 88 miles away so even Cirba can't get there at 75 mph

So now who is the sacrificial lambs for NYC   Lets say Winged Foot (West) and Baltusrol lose their match

I guess the Philly consensus is

#3    Aronimink
#4    Roling Green
#5   Philly Cricket

ok NYC  give me your  team

Or us regular folks who take the train -- LIRR is your friend.  I clocked well over 300 rounds at Bethpage and I'd bet less than a dozen were by car.  My friends down south had a hard time wrapping their head around not owning a car...my explanation was "it's like a boat down south, it's nice to have a friend who owns one but you don't want to own it yourself!"
