My longtime friend Dave Evenson is responsible for these. He does content for the USGA and PGA Tour, and especially a lot of fun stuff for the Korn Ferry Tour which is his primary beat. A great follow @golfingevenson on Instagram!

Didn’t Sandy Tatum host a Walker Cup team at CP years ago and conclude it wasn’t a great test for them  because it wasn’t long enough?  What is the yardage from the tips these days?

Cypress Point last hosted the Walker Cup in 1981. Corey Pavin and Hal Sutton were the "young guys" on the U.S. team.

It was held a week or two before the 1981 US Amateur at the Olympic Club, which was won by Nathaniel Crosby in one of the all-time great "Cinderella stories."

The back tees measured 6 552 according to my card from last year. On a relatively calm day, in my opinion, it's certainly the easiest of the top 20 or so courses in America that I've played. But who doesn't enjoy seeing birdie barrages in match play, especially team match play?

I was a student in Berkeley in the summer of 1981 and got the Greyhound bus from SF down to Carmel to watch the matches. Classic Brit performance, only 9-7 down going into the final singles, where we (Ronan Rafferty, Roger Chapman et al) got creamed. 15-9 in the end I think. Sandy Tatum (with whom when a student my Dad used to play the piano) was indeed the presiding USGA figure.
Anyway Cypress Point remains to this day the most gorgeous golf place I have ever seen. I always (and probably wrongly) say to friends who have never been that if you combined six holes of Sunningdale, six holes of Prestwick and six holes around the Pacific, then you'd capture something of Cypress. I am not sure that i am going to make it for this year's iteration, and tickets do seem quite hard to come by, but of all the major golf events on this year then this Walker Cup and the Women's Open at Porthcawl would be my two top picks at which to spectate.

Richard, I recall that Ronan Rafferty received press coverage before the matches as the young star of the GB&I team.  Stanford put in a pitch for him to play college golf, but he turned pro instead.  That was a fun time for golf in Northern Calif.
