Working on this so it allocates likes/dislikes to posts individually as well as a running total. Appreciate all the feedback! As mentioned in OP, this is just a test—if we're not feeling it in a couple weeks, we can remove it, but figured it was worth testing out before removing the karma function entirely.

Thanks for working to make this place better, Andrew.  If possible, I would also try to tie the up/down votes to a user in a transparent way.  Almost everyone on this site uses their real name to post their opinions, hiding likes or dislikes seems it could incentivize less than ideal behavior. If you're not willing to vote a post with your name attached to it, you probably shouldn't click either.

Now that's a REALLY great suggestion!

Who's leading?   ;)

I see I have a Karma total of 10 but don't know if that's 20 upvotes and 10 down or just 10 up but if the former I'll hunt the naysayers down and...and...go on a retribution tour against their worthless opinions.  Or not.   :)

It's not a big deal either way, truth be told.

Well you were down to Karma=8 when I got here but are now Karma=9 after my UP vote so you've definitely received 2 DOWN votes, at a minimum...   ;) ;D

I'm now down to "8" Karma.    ::)

I must be too nice...I've only given upvotes, particularly since I've found the very handy "Ignore" function actually works.   ;D

I gave Dan King an upvote today. Is he still with us? He’d love to be the most popular kid at the dance.

I gave one uptick so far to Niall for his green text gag…that was good. I won’t give downticks…what sort of putz bothers to do that? I am fully expecting to receive downticks for that comment. 😎

UP vote registered for you fella...

As for your question, given there's a 24-hour governor on DOWN votes it appears I have at least a half-dozen following me around  ;) daily -- wonder why? ;D

Do we really need this? Many have double-digit downvotes. They can't have that many lousy posts. I had three upvotes, and then I posted what I thought was a very gentle reply to my friend JC on the best new thread. I went back 20 minutes later, and I had three downvotes. What does this add? It would take a very egregious post for me to downvote someone.

People compelled to troll will read both ups and downs as wins; the system cannot cure the terminals. If the functionality can anchor votes to specific posts, then +1. It is a form of participation and can cut down on repetition, incl +1s. ;)

I will continue to share my good-faith, if unpopular, thoughts. I have no pretense or qualms with a double digit negative score from folks who may not share my views. I only hope my positions are just unpopular and not really, really dumb.

I suspect that given the reputation of this site, the vast majority of us will be acclaimed for our least worst score instead of a best score.

Andrew, this system is not a good adder in the way you are using it. It will eventually discourage people from getting involved, create paranoia and one-upmanship, and stop people from being truly honest in the way they engage.

By all means have an upvote / downvote system to gauge whether there are posters out there who are creating the wrong kind of atmosphere or closing down discussion. But do not have the results open for all to see. Use it as a trend for you - as moderator - to take responsibility to have a quiet word with any serial offender behind the scenes.

Generally, we don't know which posts are rewarded or punished or why. I figure I got downvotes from my replies to my friend JC on the Best New thread. I went from +3 to -7 in a heartbeat. I have always tried to be kind, informative, and inquisitive. I have been on this site since 2003 and have loved every minute of my time here. I've started over 650 threads and have loved to hear people's responses. I'm not convinced Karma adds anything positive to the site.

In my opinion, the downvote button should be removed and there should only be an upvote button. This allows people to react positively to excellent posts and allows posters to see that people found worth in their post. Removal of the downvote button also allows people to share potentially controversial opinions without fear of being downvoted to oblivion. Some of the best threads here are when someone questions a commonly held opinion and discussion follows.

Reminds me of those stupid 360 degree feedback things we did in my former corporate life. I remember my immediate manager calling me and saying "thanks a lot for giving me a shite review". I said it wasn't me and he goes, "right, well I know who it was".....OK mate push on.

This whole "up/down" vote business is the same as "likes" that drive adolescents to despair and make no contribution to any possible substantive topic. Of course, maybe I'm missing the point, and this is really a Pythonesque bit where the walks are silly, the parrot is dead, nudge-nudge, wink-wink, say no more.
