Alwoodley 18 = Cypress Point 10?
« on: December 16, 2024, 04:57:36 PM »
A member of the Top 100 Golf Courses Facebook group posted up some photos from his round at Alwoodley the other day.

Seeing his photo taken from the 18 tee:

I couldn't help but feel/think/notice a certain similarity to the tee shot at CPC #10:

The plan views have some features in common:

Okay, certainly not 100% a copy, but enough similarities to suggest a parent/child relationship? Or simply the silly-season driven, fevered imaginings of a bored, golf-starved FBD?
To my shame, I’ve never played in Yorkshire. Anyone played both with something intelligent to add?

Seasons Greetings Marty
I've played both a few times and wouldn't say that being on either would remind of the other immediately, given the difference in length, topography, greens and strategy.
Maybe it is silly season imaginings

I've played both, and I love both courses.
The routings and bunkering of both are excellent., the style of bunkering changed a lot with Alwoodley being simpler, effective (but unique) bunkers whilst Cypress Point was the height of the high-aesthetic 'clouds in the sky' bunkers.
You should make an effort to see Alwoodley as the routing is genius, with play crossing from one side of the course to the other 5 times.

I'm not sure if the lhs fairway bunkering is original, as there was some changes going on in 2007 on 18 due to boundary issues. Others may know.

I enjoyed the idea.  Our weather has been similar to the northern hemisphere in number only - 37 celsius vs 37 Fahrenheit  :)

I think you're right about the LHS bunkering at Alwoodley.  Introduced to reduce balls in gardens, I think.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Heather, and the practice ground beyond that, used to flank the left side of the 18th hole. At some point (in the 80s I think) the club sold that land for housing, with the new boundary becoming a problem in lieu of trees fully establishing.

Ken Moodie added a pair of bunkers, which were seen by the club as unpopular and unfair. 5 years ago, I filled in the near one, and flipped the rear bunker backwards, to more replicate the original heather line, and to give some room for the weaker-average golfer to drive.

As for the question, the topography at CP is quite different to that at Alwoodley, even if the bunker schemes are similar in 2D form.
