Question for folks in the Pinehurst / Southern Pines area
« on: December 11, 2024, 01:20:18 PM »
Following on to my post earlier this year about a 60th birthday trip to Mid Pines, Pine Needles, and Southern Pines. I booked it for April 17-20, 2025.

Do any of the locals know if the courses get overseeded? If so, will it be taken over by the Bermuda in mid-April?

Thanks,

Tim

Southern Pines and Mid Pines are over seeded whereas Pine Needles is not.  I live in Raleigh and that is transition time but it wouldn’t stop me from going, especially with a warm spring.

There is no way to accurately predict when Bermuda will come to life each spring, but in very general terms, the Bermuda will likely be greening up by mid-April, though still fairly thin.  It varies; 2024 was pretty early, 2023 much later.  Conventional wisdom is that overseeding slows up the Bermuda at least somewhat.

But as Hart said, I don’t think I’d let any of this keep me from that trip.

As member for the past 15 years, I can confidently say that this is a wonderful time of year and  peak season in the Sandhills. The courses will be in excellent condition. The firmness and speed of the greens in spring largely depend on weather conditions rather than grass type. To ensure a quicker round, it’s best to aim for the earliest tee time, as many northern golfers are just starting their season, and their swings may not be fully tuned yet.
