This question was brought up at the 25th anniversary/Mashie celebration in Pinehurst this past week by El Prez Vaughn Halyard, but it's an interesting question worth asking the entire group in honour of Donald Ross' birthday (November 23).

So, what Donald Ross golf course do you want to see be restored? There have been a handful of quality Ross renovations this side of the millennia, but I'm curious as to some of the lesser-known Ross courses that could be great in your opinion.

I'll start: Mississaugua in Toronto. While not a pure Ross (George Cumming did the original layout, with Ross overhauling the property), bringing back the Ross features would add a lot to the layout, which is more of a Doug Carrick these days than anything else. Stanley Thompson did renovate shortly after Ross (much like nearby Lambton) which complicates defining who did what in old aerials and photos---though their obvious stylistic differences could be sifted through. Nonetheless, the property has potential, with an aggressive ridge separating the high side holes from the low side, with two holes slowly working their way down into the Credit River valley and the superb 15th thrusting itself back up.

What says you?

Drew,

not a restoration but I think it would be cool to nuke the Tunnel 9 at Banff as part of the restoration and build a 9 hole short/estate course in the style of Donald Ross.

Shennecossett in CT.  The only public Ross in the state.  It's a nice play now but could be improved in several ways with some restorative effort.  And they have aerials from the 1930's.

Chris-I would love to see the Mungeam holes across Eastern Point Rd redone in the Ross style and despite the wonderful setting of the 16th green I wish more chances were taken with the contouring and surrounds. Regardless I agree that it could be improved and is a good pick.

Drew,

Congrats on your new role at Golfclubatlas! I definitely appreciate your research and writing. Welcome.
I strongly agree with Sean's suggestion for Grosse Ile, which is located about 25 miles south of Detroit. Lots of potential there! Woodhill in Wayzata, MN has some cool land with movement that is currently obscured by too many trees.

Grosse Ile Golf & CC in MI. Incredible set of greens.

I'd also like to see Rackham in Huntington Woods, MI be re-purposed. The original front 9 was severely altered to make way for I-696. I think the best use of the land would be to better incorporate the course into the neighborhood by knocking down perimeter fencing and adding walking trails. I'd then propose they add a short course, driving range and putting course and restore 12 or so holes from the original design. They could also go big and restore the Albert Kahn clubhouse which is an architectural marvel.
