This closed New Jersey Tillinghast gem will be replaced by a CarMax and a self-storage facility...
CarMax and self-storage facility CubeSmart on Route 36, along with 145 age-restricted single-family homes off Monmouth Road, will replace the links at the Old Orchard Country Club.

At an upcoming meeting, the borough Planning Board is set to finalize its approval of a proposal by Surrey Equities LLC to redevelop the 18-hole golf course, a 136-acre plot that was designed by famed architect A.W. Tillinghast and opened in 1929.The project culminates years of efforts to build on the property. More than 15 years ago, a proposal to build 700 homes and 535,000 square feet of retail disintegrated after opposition from Eatontown officials, as well as from neighboring Oceanport, West Long Branch and Monmouth County freeholders.

Oh boy, that takes me back to the 1960's, when I played the course several times as a kid. Certainly the first island green I ever saw.

Our next door neighbor in Long Branch was a member for many years. My father's retirement luncheon was held there in the 1970's.

Steve Old Orchard has a functioning website so I called the course. They are still open.

The gentleman I spoke with said he’s been taking phone calls all day on the topic and had spoken to the owner who said the deal isn’t quite final.

I guess I need to run up there and play it before it happens.

I think Mike Cirba has posted here in the past questioning whether or not the Tillinghast legacy is really correct.

I couldn’t remember if this was the course Mike posted about or if it was the old Fort Monmouth Suneagles course with the questionable Tillinghast legacy.

I was looking at Suneagles website as Fort Monmouth has been closed for ages. I thought the course was also closed. But it has survived and appears to be totally private.

I think the Tillinghast pedigree at Suneagles is far more secure than it is at Old Orchard. MikeC. also once discussed the Jumping Brook course in Neptune, which also claims a Tillinghast heritage even if it is thru one of Tillinghast's associates.

Iirc:

Suneagles: yes Tilly.

Old Orchard: no Tilly.

Feel free to correct (and if I’m wrong, I’ll use the edit feature).

The reason why many have argued both for and against Tilly as the designer of the Old Orhcard CC course is because it didn't exist in the late 1920's.
The March 12, 1936 issue of the Red Bank Daily Register, under the heading, "Club Name Changed," stated, "Daniel J. Maher, President of the Long Branch Country Club, has announced plans for the re-opening of the club. Hereafter the club will be known as the Old Orchard Country Club."
The Long Branch Country Club came into existence in 1929 and the course that was built at that time was the golf course used by the new Old Orchard Country Club when the Long Branch CC was "re-opened." So the real question is who designed that golf course?
To answer that we must first turn to the June 6, 1929 issue of the Long Branch Daily Record. Under the heading, "COUNTRY CLUB IS NOW CORPORATION," the article that followed stated, "Long Branch Country Club is now a corporation...Although the purchase of the Stillman farm has not been consumated, the committee in charge has virtually settled upon that property as the site for the course. Their decision is based on golf course experts who have examined the Stillman property. Among them was A. W. Tillinghast, one of the foremost course architects in the United States. Mr. Tillinghast is the builder of Baltusrol, Winged Foot and others."
All that is left is to sign the contract. As noted in the July 17, 1929 issue of the Asbury Park Evening Press, "A cotract for the providing of the laying out an 18-hole golf course for the Long Branch Country Club, was awarded to Martin J. Loughlin, professional of the Plainfield Country Club."
Tilly absolutely did not design the golf course.

MIke and David, Suneagles Tillinghast pedigree may be the strangest tale of all of his projects. Being as brief as possible, In 1923 Tilly designed and built the golf course for the new Myosotis Country Club. It was funded by Max Phillips who was only interested in playing polo. He was so passionate for it that in 1925 he first decided to change the name of the golf course to Suneagles. Later, that same yearhe decided that he didn't want golf played at his beloved polo club and funded the purchase of new land that would have a new golf course built on it for a new golf club, the Suneagles Golf and Country Club that opened for play in May, 1926. This course also was designed by Tilly.
Later on another twist to this story as in early 1932, it would become the Monmouth County Country Club...By the way, Max Phillips was a member of this club as well...

Phil -

Thanks for the info. For what it is worth, the Listings page on the Tillinghast Society website does include Jumping Brook, Myosotis (which I had never heard of before), Old Orchard and Sungeagles, as well as Norwood CC.

https://tillinghast.net/tillinghasts-work/listings/

Clearly Tillinghast spent a fair amount of time in Long Branch/Monmouth County back in the day.

Old orchard is not worth playing and has no architectural features that would lead anyone to believe it is Tillinghast.

Martin O’Laughlin also designed Watchung Valley. At one time, thought to be a Raynor or Banks design.  I believe he was also involved with the design at Passaic.
