Royal Porthcawl charity day - Thursday 14 Aug 2025
« on: October 26, 2024, 06:43:29 AM »
I'm going to be visiting Wales in Aug 2025 and there is an open comp at Royal Porthcawl that works perfectly with my itinerary.  Problem is it's a team event (£550.00/team of 4 including breakfast rolls and lunch).  Wondering if there are others interested in creating a team and splitting the cost.  Registration opens on 31 Oct 2024 at 10am local and not sure how quick it will sell out.

Joe -

You might want to contact the club and tell them you are a single hoping to play in the event. They might be able to find you a group looking to fill a spot in their 4-ball. Certainly worth an email or two.

Well that didn't work out.  It seems the trick of entering comps as an international visitor is ending/over.  Registration requires a CDH (10 digit).  A few Irish clubs have been requiring a GUI number (8 digit CDH) to enter in their comps.  Also Porthcawl has no interest in allowing groups less than 4 as they sell out pretty quickly.  All but a dozen times were booked within the first couple of minutes.

I don't think they care much where you're from, the CDH requirement will simply be to ease admin.  If you had a team of four with one or more having US handicaps I'm sure they'd take you but you might have to contact the club to enter.  The problem with Opens at top UK clubs is that they do get fully booked very, very quickly.  Even at (the difficult to get to) Silloth there are Opens which sell out same day.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Last year I tried to join a couple of pals who were playing in an Open comp at Golspie. It certainly wasn't booked out and there was a space on the tee sheet beside them. Because I didn't have a CDH I couldn't book online, so went along on the day and enquired whether I could play on the proviso that I couldn't win any prizes. There were still plenty of spaces.

The lady in the pro-shop advised that I was more than welcome to play on those conditions but that I'd need to pay the visitor fee of £95 rather than the Open Comp entry fee of £25. I politely declined and had a day without golf IIRC. While it was frustrating not to play with my friends I can understand the club's position and in some ways support the idea of encouraging club membership by way of the need to have a handicap. If the visitor fee had been a good bit less (about half ?) I might have gone for it but as it is I've played Golspie a number of times and while I like it (it's better than Brora in my opinion) it's not a course I'd pay £95 in those circumstances.

Mark you are correct Porthcawl graciously accommodated the group of 4 without a CDH and I was able to pay over the phone.
