Golf Magazine List - America's best courses for $100 or less
« on: September 18, 2024, 01:01:52 PM »
Just saw this new list. Note that it is a list, not a ranking.
https://golf.com/travel/america-best-golf-courses-100-less/

The Golf Magazine Top 100 Public, Top 100 Value courses, and the Top Municipal courses lists have not been updated in more than 3 years. (I don't know if it is even possible to navigate to those lists from the main Golf.com site, although one can still find them by googling). Is the plan not to update those lists anymore in the future?

Lincoln Park in SF has always (50+ years) been a neglected stepchild of SF Rec and Park.  Surprised to see it on this list...it is pretty unremarkable except for a few views.

I was about to say the same thing. The inclusion of Lincoln Park and exclusion of Northwood makes me question the entire thing. Perhaps they have a heavy focus on visual aesthetics.

Edit: I will also add that Waiehu Municipal Golf Course should also absolutely be on this list.

Lincoln Park is on the list but Rustic Canyon isn't???

I played Winnetka hundreds of times. My understanding that there has not been any Langford there from way before my time there in the 70s and 80s so I am not sure why the design credit is there.

Northwood is vastly over rated. If MacKenzie's name wasn't attached to it you'd have never heard of it. Very few MacKenzie features, in fair shape and claustrophobic fairways not representative of the Good Doctor.

Apparently Rustic Canyon at peak rates is now $104.

Winnetka is fine, but it should not be on the list. It is completely unremarkable.  There are many Chicago area courses that I think are better (some may be $100 on peak times) - Mount Prospect, Ravisloe, Bowes Creek, Highlands of Elgin to name a few.

Yeah, but that's with an online booking fee of $20 to book 2 weeks ahead on a weekend tacked on. $84 is the highest green fee.

Well, 50 years ago, we would bowl until 3am when it was time to line up for a tee time so it was worth the effort given the options. Nothing like someone pounding on the hood at 5am.  Plus we knew that Meier’s was waiting for us post-round.

Palatka is a part of me and I’m a part of it. Man I love that place.

What a great first post!  Welcome!  I've been wanting to play Palatka for a while - seems like my kind of place.

Certainly concur on Kankakee Elks and would put forward George Dunne National in Oak Forest, Illinois.

The small panel of Golf Magazine would be particularly ill-suited to compile this list.  I do not see how they could hear of, no less see and rate such courses.

Los Verdes Golf Course.
Max rate is $48.50 and for seniors it's $22.50 during the week.
I like to refer to it as a "poor man's Pebble Beach"...

Chris I like the value for los verdes and played it probably 20 times in late 90s.  If u could tell me it would be less than 6 hours on a weekend I would go. ;D

Windsor GC (Windsor, CA, north of Santa Rosa) is well worth playing. It used to be a stop on the Hogan/Nike Tour and has hosted the Symetra Tour as well. Green fees top out at $74.

One more bump to see if anyone can answer the question I posed in the original post of this thread...
