Lions Municipal

Hey all...My wife has to be in Austin TX for a work conference May 3-5. I am free to explore the local golf scene. If I book a 4some at Lions, is there anyone on here that would want to join? Also, any other suggestions if I am able to get in a second round? TIA.

I wish I could be there to show it to you myself. It's not particularly architecturally interesting, but it's culturally significant to those of us that grew up in the area. I've fully mapped the course, and have hole-by-hole commentary on the wiki. The memorabilia from Crenshaw and Kite in the clubhouse is impressive.

If you want a taste of old Austin, I'd recommend Hula Hut or Maudie's down the street after the round. And if you really, really want a bit of local Austin culture, you won't find a place more unique than Donn's Depot, which is also not far away, but don't forget do bring your dancing shoes.

Maudie’s! It doesn’t get any better.

Dirty's is good, however, I see it much more in the world of nostalgia for students at the university. It's only problem for visitors is that it's a good, unique burger place, in a city with multiple regional cuisines. If you're visiting Austin, a burger is probably going to be pretty low on the priority list. I think the start of the show is Tex-Mex, both old (Maudie's, Julio's, Matt's) and new (Veracruz, Torchy's). You've got interior Mexican (Polvo's).  Then you've got barbecue, both high brow (Franklin's, La BBQ) and low brow (Rudy's, Pok-e-Jo's, County Line). You've got southern food (Hoover's). That's before you get to the quirky Austin spots (Texas Chili Parlor, Driskill) or actually good Austin restaurants (Bufalina, Uchi, Birdie's). And then you got all the other unique Austin burger joints competing for that burger spot on the trip (Sandy's, Counter Cafe, P. Terry's, Casino El Camino, Whataburger, RIP Hut's, etc.).

To make this less off topic. My favorite burger in Austin was always the burger at the turn at Lions, but sadly they’ve changed the vendor and that burger is no longer available. You’d have to watch for grackles because they were smart enough to steal the whole thing while you teed off on 10.

Also, a very classic Tex Mex place is El Patio in north campus. I ran into Ben Crenshaw a couple of times there but never introduced myself because he was always with his family. That was a very long time ago though. The staff told me later that I should have. It’s a extremely locals place.

Rich, if you're looking for a second round and you're wanting to stay close to Austin I'd recommend Morris Williams, another municipal course. It's pretty fun for the price, plus you can stop along Manor afterwards for some more Austin food.

There are some good food options already listed. But I would add that any run-down looking taco truck in the parking lot of a gas station probably serves delicious breakfast tacos.

Long live this thread: in Austin for business.
Instead of running to the airport, I went Maudie’s. Queso and the “Regular Dinner.” I know Ben Crenshaw would approve.

Alright, then let me add one more. If you're out playing at Morris Williams, there is a little spot just before you get there called Batch Craft Beer & Kolaches. The kolache is the traditional pastry of the Texas Czech population, and it has a long history in Central Texas. It comes an a large variety of flavors and styles, both sweet and savory. I can also say that the beer there is great, and I know one of the folks on their team of brewers.

I would if it were feasible, but I currently reside in San Francisco. I just grew up there and lived there on-and-of in my 20s, but still have a lot of friends and family there, and tend to go back a couple times a year.

Hi Rich, I lived in Austin from 2013-2022 (currently residing in Grand Rapids MI). I met a few GCAers but overall I don't think there is a big GCA community in Austin (though I could be wrong). As you can tell there are several folks here who are familiar with the area but I'm not sure how many Austin residents we have here. Good luck though!
