Old small headed metal Drivers - Dubai tour pros video

Make of it what you will ….. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mCPGmB9L3X8 …… modern era balls being used though not the balatas that were usually the ball of choice for elite and better players back 30 or so years ago when many/most of these models came out.
Oh and the shots are being hit from the top of a pretty high hill.

This is what they should have done rather than limiting the ball. Maximum driver head size of like 200cc or so.

The drivers used with balatas are not the drivers to be used with the modern ball. Right away, you have a mismatch limiting performance. The modern ball made a discontinuous jump in distance when it came out. Then, when they started matching the drivers of the day to the modern ball you got another discontinuous jump in distance. Once that happened, they started improving the technology of the drivers.

So, since the ball originally created the distance problem, it is appropriate to limit it first.

Since the drivers developed afterwards to contribute to the problem, it is appropriate to rein them in second at a future date.

A small headed driver can still hit the ball a mile if it is a hollow head with a thin face.  You still get the trampoline effect.

I really think that they need to focus on the materials and not artificially limit the CCs of the clubheads.  For hundreds of years, the clubhead size was self limiting.  They could made 460 cc heads, but they'd weigh a ton.

How big is the head of the typical 3-wood these days? How far do most of the pros hit it off the tee?

Well in 2022 Rory’s stock distance with his 5 wood was 275 yards. He was using a Taylormade Stealth Plus at 150cc

It should be titled, "For those who argue that today's distance gains in golf are primarily due to the increased athleticism of the modern golfer.".

For Memorial Park, Adam Scott put a 7-wood in his bag to use on a couple of the par-5 holes.  He hits that 260.

Re. fairway wood distance,  you have to remember that they're jacked, too.

Traditional driver, two wood, three wood, four wood in persimmon was 11*, 14*, 17*, 20*. (With some exceptions)

The Heaven wood was 20* @ four wood length.  And they called it a seven wood.

The pro's three woods are ~13-15 and their five woods are about trad three wood loft, and length.
Over time, the guy in the ideal position derives an advantage, and delivering him further  advantage is not worth making the rest of the players suffer at the expense of fun, variety, and ultimately cost -- Jeff Warne, 12-08-2010

Andy Johnson made the point that Original Taylor Made Driver may have been the hardest club ever to hit (much harder than a persimmon in his opinion)

Buck, do you remember his reasoning behind the conclusion?

It's also important to note that all these drivers in the video have old shafts (some of them steel!).  Rolling back/changing the technology in the driver head is only part of it, as you also have modern high tech shafts that are stiff and light.  If you gave Rory one week on trackman, I would be curious how much he could improve with these clubs.

I’m not sure that much if he was required to play with the, heads, shafts, balls and know how of the time.
