hole-sequence the golf course contest
« on: December 23, 2023, 02:01:49 PM »
This season I played a course where the hole-sequencing was, well, interesting!

I now challenge my hard-core GCA nuts (perhaps Cousin Eddie is over and you need a reason to retreat to your man-cave) to put together the order of holes 2-18 from the given diagram below. I've indicated where hole 1 is located, and note the clubhouse is at the red dot. [Note: the par 5 hole right along the highway is not #1 but rather letter I]

Here are two clues to help you perhaps get it right:

1. The course has returning nines.

and

2. There are three long green to tee walks.

Good luck, and Happy and Merry and all that good seasonal stuff!

You did pretty darn well!

You have a couple of sequences of holes correct. You have an early stretch of holes (6 of them) sequenced in the right order (but incorrect hole numbers), and late you have a stretch of 7 holes sequenced in the right order (but incorrect hole numbers).

Very nice Erik,

Dealing with that little peninsula of 5 and 6 looks to have been awkward routing wise, and 13 looks like a good hole, at least from the aerial view.

Fun activity Joe!

Mike T and I were both very tired at the end of the round.

According to Google Earth, the 3 longest transitions are (approx):

4 green to 5 tee - 300 yards
8 green to 9 tee - 280 yards
12 green to 13 tee - 220 yards

My bet is that it is flat. In that area of Delaware the highest points are overpasses!!

I thought it would be dead flat. And it was close to it in most places.

So that leads to the question why the long green to tee ?

Trying to figure that one out using Historic Aerials.

Me thinks the course has changed over the years.

Matt, you probably need to find a way to add letters to all the holes so people can easily give you their routing in an understandable way.

Joe,

In 1961 it looks to be a 9 holer, and the area for holes 5, 6 and 7 and 13 tee were certainly not in use.

And by 1981 was converted into the 18 holer that exists today.  (The 1982 aerial makes the current routing pretty easy to identify)

Looks like walkers could leave their bag on the edge of the 13th fairway after 12 and just carry their driver back to 13 tee. That's kinda fun.

Okay, hopefully this one works! There are 3 nines: Zinfandel starts with G, Chardonnay starts with T, and Merlot starts with P. The cart paths help a little.  :P  Answers below the picture!

Answers:
Zinfandel: GCFJMEBAI
Chardonnay: TU&ZNLKDH
Merlot: PQRSVWXYO

And I read it was 11 holes in 1969!
