The Chain (Coore and Crenshaw) at Streamsong

Article about it in the current NYT/Athletic. Strong likelihood that it is much better than its name.

There’s a positive connotation! The property was a phosphate mine and the tees are marked by horseshoe-like things resembling chain links. “Ball and Chain” would be ballsy. “The Chain of Events”? ::)

Can’t read due to paywall. I’ve heard of this course but haven’t been told, is it a par 3 course?

A nice article, with some quotes from Andy Johnson.

The Chain looks pretty cool, actually.

Although I question how realistic it will be for 19-hole, municipal, par-3 courses built in a similar manner? Hope I'm wrong.

From the article:

"Based on Johnson’s explanation of golf course architecture top-down composition, maybe we’ll see the success of courses like The Chain finally spur local municipalities and private developers into renovating pre-existing, nondescript public courses into alternative short courses."

For some context, here is a relatively quick list of recent municipal/community-oriented short/shorter courses whose development predates the building of The Chain:

2009 - CommonGround Golf Course - Short Course
2014 - Goat Hill Park
2015 - Rockwind Community Links - Li'l Rock
2016 - Winter Park 9
2016 - Braemar - Academy Course
2017 - San Pedro
2021 - Belmont Golf Course - Little Bell
2022 - East River 9
2022 - The Glen Golf Park
*2023 - PGA Frisco - The Swing/The Dance Floor (*still at a resort but also some community programming)
2023 - West Palm Golf Park

While Andy is right that architects and municipalities have definitely been inspired by what's gone on at private clubs and resorts re: short courses, the article's suggestion that The Chain is going to be the course that "finally" kicks off this trend in muni golf is not supported by facts or recent history. Par-3 and executive-length golf courses have been part of municipal golf for decades.

Cal, it's being called a "short course": "...on this card, a glaring omission. No par. Just play. Have a match against a friend. Grab a couple of clubs, a few beverages, and go. Winner of each hole decides where to tee off on the next hole. You can play a six-hole loop that circles a lovely grove of oak trees. Or play a 13-hole loop. Or play all 19. Who cares?"

Streamsong Golf Resort in Streamsong, Florida, has opened its fourth golf course, The Chain. The 3,000-yard, 19-hole, par-3 course debuted with 13 holes in November 2023. By early April 2024, all 19 holes were in play.
The Chain brought the top design duo of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw back to Streamsong for their second act after designing the award-winning Streamsong Red in 2012. The Chain moniker originates from decades-old dragline chains found on site during the course routing process that were used to mine the land where Streamsong now sits.
The short course brings a new concept to the golf offerings at Streamsong with options for six- and 13-hole loops or a 19-hole round. Holes vary in length from 50 to over 300 yards and incorporate a mix of centuries-old oaks, mining cuts and views of Little Payne Creek to create an exhilarating experience. Match play is the preferred format as there is no suggested par on the scorecard and each hole will be devoid of tee markers. Players will instead be encouraged to tee off from a location of their choosing designated by dragline chains marking the beginning and end of each teeing area.
