Best In State Rankings Through Time
« on: August 21, 2023, 08:47:26 AM »
Does anyone have a record of Best In State Rankings through time. I am specifically interested in Pennsylvania. Various rankings GD/GW/etc. would be great. Thanks

Good morning Jim,

I have a modest collection of old golf magazines I keep around for the rankings.  For everyone's amusement, here is the Golf Digest top 15 courses in Pennsylvania from November 1993:

3.  Laurel Valley
4.  Aronimink
5.  Saucon Valley (Grace)
6.  Philadelphia
7.  Saucon Valley (Old)
8.  Lancaster

10.  Pittsburgh Field C.
11.  Philadelphia Cricket
12.  Fox Chapel
13.  Commonwealth National
14.  Sewickley Heights
15.  Huntingdon Valley

At first glance, I thought the 1993 list looked pretty good.  Then, I was curious how it might compare to the GD list 30 years later.  I am not really sure what to make of the comparison, but figured I would share it.

6. Fox Chapel (12)
7. Lancaster (8 )

As a former member of Commonwealth, I am saddened by the decline in the current GD Ratings from 28 to 40.The course created a big scene as it was the first private course in PA built in a long time opening 1990. It was known as a course with high maintenance standards and difficulty with a Slope Rating of 131 from the White tees. .  I know a new Superintendent took over a few years ago after the retirement of the original Superintendent  .  I'll have to contact the club and advise.

I spoke with an Assistant Pro who advised that a big storm or tornado swept through the course about 2 years ago requiring dealing with the significant damage to the course- trees, fairways, bunkers, bridges. The course was closed for awhile causing the drop in the current ratings from 28 to 40.

The state lists are kind of silly, as they are splitting hairs among a bunch of courses that are 6's or 5's on my scale [or 7's in PA].

That said, Rolling Green at 19th in PA seems impossible to me.  And where, pray tell, is Manufacturers?

Tom,

When you made Rolling Green a 7 it was infested with evergreens. Come next year and see it after our last nine holes are upgraded.

As for GD state ranking I can’t explain insanity.

Rolling Green suffered from poor maintenance for a while. No more.
