Courses with an 8-10 or 7-11 hole split in their 'nines'
« on: July 14, 2023, 12:45:21 AM »
Just wondering if anyone knows any examples of courses, well-known or otherwise, that have splits of 8 and 10 holes returning to the clubhouse instead of 9 holes? Or even 7 and 11.

We are redesigning a course which will be losing land on the front nine for a retirement village development and as they have some vacant land on the back nine we will be ending up with 8 holes returning to the clubhouse and then 10 holes to get back.

Any help appreciated!

Sort of a cheat answer, RM Composite for The Presidents Cup comes back after 10 holes I think

The course I grew up on, Bothwell Castle GC near Glasgow now has a 8 and 10 split. The club sold the site of the old clubhouse together with the 18th green. That required building a new clubhouse (and a new 18th green) on another part of the course. It didn't change the order of holes as such but just meant that the course started on the old 17th. Before the clubhouse was positioned in the corner of the property and there wasn't the option of a two tee start although there was the option to skip 7 or 8 holes by cutting in if the course wasn't too busy.

Just looked it up Terry, RMC comes back to the clubhouse after 12 holes. Thanks though.

Both courses by Tom Doak at Stonewall in Elverson PA have the 8th hole return to the clubhouse with a par 3 ninth playing away.  There are many many examples, I just cite Stonewall as I think it’s interestingly consistent.

Renaissance Club original routing was exactly the same. 8 to clubhouse with par-3 9th playing away.

Strandhill has its 10th and 18th greens closest to the clubhouse although it’s on such a tight site that it doesn’t really feel like a 10-8 split (12 green and 6 tees are also as close).

I’m sure there are other clear examples but I can’t recall them…. Some almost examples include OTM pre-Ruddy at Rosapenna which was close to 10-8 and Portrush Valley is close to 7-11 since rerouting.

Very common on UK courses to have returns either 8 or 10.
A combination of whats good for golf and good for turf.

Jeffersonville, the lovely Donald Ross muni in PA, has the 10th hole returning to the clubhouse I do believe, with 8 holes back side.  And Winged Foot East is the same IIRC, with the big tree at the 10th green by the clubhouse.

Winged Foot East is a great example. I'm fairly sure that at least at one point, they used a two tee start in the Anderson and groups would start on either 1 or 11 - side note - the 10th on the West is a pretty horrific hole to start on.

Jeffersonville can actually be described as an “8-2-8” routing.

It’s not unreasonable to tee off on 1, 9, or 11. 1 and 9 functionally share the same area and 11 is just on the other side of the clubhouse. The new halfway house is behind the 11th tee overlooking 18.

Quite a few courses don't come back at all certainly. The "halfway house" isn't after 9 either. We could list many, but don't think that is your focus.

Stoneridge in Woodberry Minnesota returns to the clubhouse after 8.  The 9th is a short par 3.  It seems like the right approach given the available land and sets up one of my favorite five hole stretches in the state.

I think there was a thread about this same topic within the last month or two.

The Lake Course at the Olympic Club returns to the clubhouse after the par-3 8th hole. Oddly enough, the burger dog stand is by the 10th green.

Flint Hills National (Fazio) returns to the clubhouse after the 6th hole. There is a “halfway” house after 11.

Winged Foot East has a "front 10" and back 8...

Ole Monterey (Flynn) plays 10-8 but that's not the original routing.

Sunningdale CC, Scarsdale NY, has a front 10 and a back 8.  Members have no issues with going out to play 10

The plans I've seen for Huntingdale in Melbourne would create one as it inserts a new par-3 between current holes #7 and #8.

New Castle CC, a Tillie in western PA comes back at 7, then goes out and back for 8 and 9 before heading off for the back 9.

I think 8 and 9 might have been 1 and 2 at one point as 8 is right next to the range and Tillie did a couple of other courses in Western PA where 2 came back (Sunnehanna and Nemacolin).
