Was this short par 3 part of the original routing?  Which hole was added to allow this hole to be removed?  Presumably the current 17 was 16, played to the short 17th, then 18?

Have a look at the article written by the USGA.  Little 17 is a relic of the Fowler design.  The sketch in the article shows the proposed new Thomas holes over the old Fowler layout.

When I zoom in on that second pic, it almost looks like old time GCA'er Shivas aka Dave Schmidt.  Does he wear glasses?
