OT - Reed, Again
« on: January 30, 2023, 09:25:55 AM »
There must be someone here prepared to defend Reed this time, right?

Maybe he hit a ball in the 3rd tree during a practice round and that is what they found. Or maybe the rules official needs higher magnification binoculars.
Or maybe at this point you tell Reed to climb the tree and bring the ball down himself, anything short of that I'm going to presume you're lying.

I think you could defend him if he said "yeah, that is my ball" or something, but the facts below really throw a wrench in anyone defending him (as I have done in the past):
  • He said he "always" marks his ball with an arrow. Other photos show balls he's using the same day with no such marking.
  • He said he's "100% certain" it was his ball, when he could have no such level of certainty… primarily because it's almost a 0% chance it's his ball.
Had he said: "Do we have video?" or "We all saw my ball go into the tree, not come out, there's a ball with a black line that is the same number and model of my golf ball" and let the RO decide if that was enough to positively identify, that'd be a whole other discussion. He didn't. He lied about the way he "always" marks his ball, and he said "100%" with regards to his identification.

I'm surprised no one went out to the tree the video showed his ball going into after the round and looked for his ball.

I looked at the video and couldn't say with any certainty where the ball finished.

I thought players announced their ball and marking on the 1st tee? If so, wouldn't other players be able to at least repeat the make, number and marking...assuming one could see that far up the tree?  If not, players should be more aware of each other's ball so they can at least offer an opinion for identification. Pro players are so detached from each other that its hard to believe they can really attest cards with much level confidence.

I’m going to go hit balls to try to get that image out of my head.

This video slows it down and show's the ball entering the front of the first tree.

Link doesn't work. If it's the same video Brandel used I can't see the ball get stuck in a tree.

This is not required at all under the Rules of Golf. Nor do you have to announce to the group when you're changing balls, markings, etc.

You only have to be able to identify your own golf ball.

The guy just can’t help himself. I think the hate motivates him and he genuinely thinks he’s doing the right thing, day in day out, and if that doesn’t please everyone so be it. To an extent, lots of athletes are like. The recently departed QB of my beloved Bulldogs seems to be of this mindset. Me against the world.

I am a believer in karma though. The the make rate on 14ft putts isn’t all that high. Good win for Rory.

I did not see the event... but if he called in a rules official and was guided the proper way to proceed, not sure what the problem was unless he lied to the rules official.

My understanding is that you state the ball and number you are playing on the first tee to make sure someone else in your group is not playing the same ball.  With provisionals don't you tell the others in your group what the first ball was and what the second ball you are about to hit is?

Jerry,

That is what probably should be done every time, but not required.  An issue is when 2 identical balls are found with identical markings in the same area.
