Hitting balls where they aren't intended to go.
« on: October 29, 2022, 11:39:29 AM »
While this isn't surprising someone did this, its at least somewhat creative.

It reminds me of a course I played in Idaho a few times where the tee box for a par 3 was built near a freeway, elevated some 50+ feet above it.  The course had to install a few hidden cameras to stop players from hitting balls on the freeway, and they put a warning sign up indicating they would pass any footage along to the police.

It never occurred to me to hit a ball into the grand Canyon. On the moon, however, is a different story.

While playing Whirpool I took on the Niagara River once, was fun watching the ball, but no contest. Remember when John Daly tried it.. and when long driver Maurice Allen did it... its all about mileposts...

Driving through Colorado once, I launched a similar shot from the highway down into Tennessee Pass, where it struck a moving freight train.  I am not an influencer of any kind, LOL.

Hitting balls into the ocean from the 15th fairway or 16th tee at Cape Kidnappers is irresistible to many people.  There's a lot of hang time, and you can see the ball splash if the lighting is right.

It all starts with a stolen range ball.

So true. 50 years after the Statute of Limitations has passed, I fear putting in writing some of the dumb places we hit shots. All I can say is that a highway, semitrailers, and a guy sitting in a lawn chair in front of his garage were somehow involved.

Carl,

Thanks for the sharing that!  ;D ;D

P.S. Speaking of range balls, my buddy stole a few after going on a boy scout outing to the range, and decided letting em go out the side window on the freeway was a good idea.

The course I grew up playing had a long par five that ran along a busy railway. A right of passage for young players was to try and hit a low screamer into the open door of a passing freight car. The shot required perfect trajectory as well as having the shot “lead” the rapidly moving train. All this was good fun until someone drilled a ball into the open door of a car and the resulting ricochet hit a “gentlemen” that was riding the rails.  :o

In a significantly more elaborate version, Andre Tolme golfed across the entire country of Mongolia. He had one club, a push cart of sorts, and relied on the abundant local hospitality. It's a fun read which I highly recommend.

On a trip across the pond for a fraternity brother's wedding in the summer of '82, we spent a few tourist hours visiting the Cliffs of Mohr. We were stunned at the lack of security. You could walk right up to the edge (which I most certainly did not!), and sit with your legs dangling over the side. I had the bright Idea to run back to the car to grab a six iron and a few rat balls out of my bag A busload of Japanese tourists delighted in taking videos and pictures of the crazy Americans hitting golf balls off the cliffs. It was amazing how nerve wracking it was to be swinging a club within 5 or 6 feet of the edge -- makes J Spieth's shot on #8 at Pebble even more astounding. I recall being afraid that the club was going to slip out of my now sweaty hands, and holding it with a death grip.

Thats about 25% of the time when I am golfing, if you assume a cone of acceptability. You probably saw a lot in your grudge matches. That was what I was thinking when I merely had read the title. Could be a subtitle for any book written about golf.

There was a "sacrifice a ball to the river" ritual at an earlier club. At Waverley there was a see if you can hit it across the Willamette playing 17 or 18 (even Tiger failed)

I've never been in-person, but there's a course in Texas that has a green across the Rio Grande you can fire at.  Just looked it up, Black Jack's Crossing at Lajitas.  The course looks penal but very scenic
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

Gee, thanks Pete, the truth hurts...although 25% as it pertains to Garland is certainly on the low side!  ;D

P.S.  I guess I should have titled this "Deliberately hitting them where you ain't supposed to.." or something like that.

Willie Nelson used to hit balls into the Pacific Ocean
He found a place where they would wash ashore in the following days.
"If you're the swearing type, golf will give you plenty to swear about.  If you're the type to get down on yourself, you'll have ample opportunities to get depressed.  If you like to stop and smell the roses, here's your chance.  Golf never judges; it just brings out who you are."
