Courses with < 4 Par 3s
« on: October 20, 2022, 11:02:34 PM »

The thread on courses with five (5) par 3s only proved to me it’s more common than most people think and provides some excellent results.

But when it comes to courses with very few par 3s, I could only come up with two.  Both also have a wide variety of length on their par fours and at least one monster par 5.

Three Par 3’s
Sandy Run - Oreland PA

Two Par 3’s
The Old Course - St. Andrews

Quite a few of the courses in the Sandbelt [Melbourne] have three par-3 holes.  My memory is a little foggy this week, but I think Kingston Heath and Commonwealth are two examples.

I have done a couple of routings over the years that had just three par-3's, but I've never had a client who wanted me to go that way.  Average players look forward to the par-3's as their best chance to make a par or a birdie, and most of my clients, at least, skew toward average golfers instead of elite players.

Rock Spring in NJ only has 3.  It's a wonderful Raynor/Banks layout with a very strong Redan and also Eden and Short holes.  Sadly missing a Biarritz.

Tom-I wonder if most average golfers don’t look forward more to par five’s than par three’s as their best chance of making par or birdie? It probably comes down to individual holes more than a subset as a 230 yard par three and 600 yard par five would be outliers in the postulate.

The same is true of the granddaddy of them all . . . The National Golf Links of America.

Also, Garden City Golf Club has always had just the three par-3's.

Pinehurst #5 has 3 par 3's
Pinehurst #1 as well.

One course where having three par 3s has always been really odd to me is the Ocean Course at The Breakers. The course is on very small, segmented acreage and would be more interesting if it had five or six varied par 3s rather than about 10 330-350 yard straightaway par 4s.

The three courses I'm aware of with only two are The Old Course, Elie and Irvine, all in Scotland. Are there any others out there?

And Elie has no par fives. But if no one told you, you'd never guess it had 16 par fours.
Over time, the guy in the ideal position derives an advantage, and delivering him further  advantage is not worth making the rest of the players suffer at the expense of fun, variety, and ultimately cost -- Jeff Warne, 12-08-2010

I miss added short holes, but don't miss three shotters at all. I like 5-6 short holes if they are good.

Yes and yes.

I believe Huntingdale also did at one point but the 5th was shortened.
