Had a TEP sighting last evening, he is alive and well.
We have a pool and a pond, the pond would be good for you.

It's only been 24 years since I last saw him, so that's very good news.

Excellent!
There is still the occasional thread topic around here when I think 'Oh, TE would have had a field day with this one!', and I miss him anew. He could move from theory & generality & history to practice & particulars & the present in a heart beat.

I would love to read more of his tales of WASP life and it's influence on architecture!   :)   Glad he's doing well.

She was canonized by John Paul II in 2000, I believe.

TE has a touch of the saint in him too, I think -- along with much else :) . He has an interest in meanings and ultimate concerns, in his case expressed through golf course design. Hence his love of Max Behr's writings on Art and Permanent Architecture etc. I went to look up a reference to his 'sunlit uplands' (a lovely, spiritually-tinged term), and found this:

"Anyone who actually achieves the ultimate goal of reaching the sunlit uplands of golf and golf architecture understands that they aren't looking at a golf course or golf architecture -- they are looking at it through a looking glass, and looking at themselves"

So when like PCraig I find myself wishing he was back here on gca.com. I remind myself that he must be much happier -not- being here anymore, which then settles the question.

Alice Paul was a Quaker suffragette. There may be another relative that was Catholic.

Yes, Ed B named her earlier in the thread, St. Katherine Ann Drexel.

"You know, the good old days weren't always good, and tomorrow ain't as bad as it seems..."

Thus sang the great American poet, William Martin "Billy" Joel.

Don't pine for those (Gib, Mr. Green Ink, Tom, et al) who no longer hang around these parts. Instead, cultivate and recruit subsequent generations to ensure the viable growth and evolution of GCA.

Tell your course superintendents about GCA. Tell your architects on retainer about GCA. Tell kids about GCA. Encourage them to read threads and, if so moved, send Ran an email about joining the tree house.

There isn’t an architect alive who doesn’t know about GCA. There are plenty who don’t care for it.

Hey Ron great idea to promote the future of GCA but a respect for the past and the "greats" is certainly to be admired.

No one can contest the quality of input from TEP , period!  His analysis and treatises on "lines of charm" and the right "maintenance meld" were singularly brilliant .  Just because Tiger Woods arrived it didn't  diminish the likes of Nicklaus and Jones. It only pointed out just how great they both were to be compared to the newest supernova.

Cheers

Ally~I don't know that for a fact, but I suspect that you do, or you would not have written about it. Architects SHOULD care for GCA; if they don't, they might wake up one day to find that no one gives a solid sh!t about their work. We provide them a valued service, free of charge.

Archie~I don't disagree with you one bit.

Ronald, I also know for a fact that many architects do not care for GCA.  I’ve heard some object to the loose, unreasoned opinions put forth by some.  Not totally wrong.  Sometimes you have to search to find the kernels of value, but the search is usually worth it.
By the way, I’ve always liked your Demon Deacon.  What’s your tie to Wake?

Any architect who doesn’t care for “unreasoned” opinions put forth at GCA might consider years worth of posts by Jeff Brauer who always respectfully details his response to posts Jeff feels indicate a limited understanding of golf architecture.

 8)  Well, there were only 38,000+ of them, last I remember...

Always liked TEP's tangent recollections, e.g., about fernandina beach stock car racing... I imagine him wanting to, if not borrowing some wheels and taking on the hay bales on some corners...

Bright Moments mostly remembered
Inverness (Toledo, OH) cathedral clock inscription: "God measures men by what they are. Not what they in wealth possess.  That vibrant message chimes afar.
The voice of Inverness"
