I have had overseas memberships at both Saunton and Westward Ho!. They were affordable but they also gave me the opportunity to meet and play with other members. I could play in member competition and tee off during member tee times. If you can arrange to get there once a year it is worth it.

Any clubs I am associated with - including the great value overseas membership at Carne mentioned in the article - have an unlimited number of guests that can be taken on by a member.

I do enjoy these topics about overseas memberships.

I joined Carne 2 years ago, when it looked like they were in some trouble.  My first trip as a "member" is planned for June.  While there is no restriction on number of guest total it was pretty surprising that I was only able to sign in 2 guests/day and not 3.

Not quite a membership but this year I also got on the links ticket waiting list.  A bit over 1400 on the waiting list and only 100 new folks received a ticket last year...so in 14 years I should be good to go.  Before then I hope to join one of the local clubs and get the comp ticket (no idea how I'll figure which one to join).

The thing with these two options is I didn't need to know a member and the value is incredible compared to almost anywhere else in the US.

I also envision I'll join somewhere in the south of England before I die.

There is no way that this does not become a great decision in your life. I love that place, and Ran called it a "missed opportunity", I think!!

Have residential real estate prices in Scotland’s rural villages escalated rapidly over the past few years?

Michael -

Yes, prices have risen and it seems like properties do not sit on the market for sale nearly as long as they used to. I have been following the real estate market in the Dornoch area for over 15 years. I cannot remember when there were so few properties listed for sale as there now are.

Here is an article on a rural property in the Highlands that sold in less than a month. Not that long ago a property like that might sit on the market for 3 to 6 months or more before receiving an offer.

Up until the mid 1990's a Lifetime Overseas Membership at Ballybunion was about $1500 with no annual dues ever.

Rapidly? No. Houses in Inverness were only up 1.6%.
But, since you cant get an effing tee time at RDGC, why even bother...;-)..?

On average, house prices across Scotland rose by 8.8% over the last year, more than the UK average of 6.2%.
The average Scottish home now costs £207,778 - an increase of £16,761 on 2020’s figure of £191,017.

I know in the US that a place the size of Inverness might be thought of as a small town or village but over here we consider it a city  ;D
