I don't have much on the origins of the course, so I thought I'd include an article on activities in Menomonee Falls that might be the most Wisconsin thing I've ever read.

In an article regarding Stephens Point Country Club from 1929, it is reported that William Jackson drew the plans for Lakeview and had helped work on local course. Guessing Mr. Macomber used that design and rearranged a few of the holes?

I haven't seen anything to suggest that Macomber used Jackson's plans.  The information I've seen suggests that the club switched architects during the early stages of development.


That Aug. 6, 1929 article you note states Jackson drew the "original plans" which suggests to me they were supplanted by a newer version.

Oconomowoc (CC of) l/k/a Lac La Belle GC (Oconomowoc)

The CC of Oconomowoc was organized in 1895 and moved a year later to a new site.  The club took a back seat to the new Ross course that was started in 1915, but still exists today as a relic of early Wisconsin golf.

This course, which opened in 1921, has been credited to Bendelow.  The article below suggests the lay out was done by Colin Kidd, pro at the Maple Bluff GC of Madison.

Old Mission Inn GC (La Pointe)

Located on Madeline Island in the Apostle Islands, the Old Mission Inn was built in 1897 with the golf course being added prior to 1930.  In 1941 the Inn and its grounds were gifted to Beloit College and for a period of time was used as the preseason training grounds for the college's football team.

An RTJ course was built here in the 1980's.

Oneida Golf & Riding Club (Green Bay)

Green Bay's new late 1920's club, with a bunch of names brought in to inspect the site including Alison.  The club eventually went with Stanley Pelchar of United States Golf Architects to design the 18 hole course.

An outgrowth of the old Algoma CC, the club started with a 9 hole course laid out by Tom Bendelow in 1916.  William Jackson was engaged to design a second 9 holes, with Charles Kinsman in charge of construction.

I wish I had more on the Langford & Moreau designed Ozaukee.  The club did suffer some setbacks in the 1930's and was run by the Milwaukee AC for a while before finding its footing.

Pell Lake Highlands GC (Bloomfield)

One of four different vacation communities promoted by the Chicago Evening Post on a subscription basis in the 1920's.  The others were located at Lake Michigan (near Coloma, MI), Lake Como and Interlaken.

These types of newspaper-real estate schemes were the brain child of Bertram Chapman Mayo, and took advantage of the new found mobility of the city-bound citizen looking to find their piece of the country.

Golf in the park started in 1914 with plans for two 9 hole courses.  How many holes were actually built remains a question, but there was a course there that was abandoned before being revived in 1920/21.  It appears that a second 9 holes were built around this time by W. R. Lovekin closer to the town of Ephraim.  Whatever happened to that course is unclear, as the 9 holes in the park were extended to 18 in 1928.

Pine Hills CC (Sheboygan)

Pine Hills was the new course for the Sheboygan CC when it moved in 1930.  Built by Harry Smead, the course is one of Wisconsin's most underrated.

Platteville CC (Platteville)

Located in the southwest corner of the state, Platteville was established as a lead mining community, with a mine being located on the site of the club.  Platteville was also for a number of years the preseason training site of the Chicago Bears and the home town of Pants Rowland, manager of the 1917 Chicago White Sox World Series Champions.

The golf course was extended from 9 to 18 holes in the 1980's.

One of three courses located around Powers Lake (Nippersink and Casa Loma/Aquilla being the other two), this small club seemed to be the local's course.

Credited as a Bendelow, whatever he did in 1923 appears to have been replaced by a new course in 1924 with the work done by professional Ernest Killick.  Killick would expand the course to 18 holes later in the 1920's.
