Hawaii Open
« on: January 15, 2022, 12:02:32 PM »
I just realized that Hawaii Open has been played at the same course since 1965.  Other then Augusta, Pebble Beach, Colonial, & Riviera (with a few breaks in last 50 years), are any other PGA Tour events still being consistently played at the same course for 50+ years?

I forgot about Harbor Town.  This tournament started in 1969.  I also forgot about Torrey Pines, on PGA Tour since 1968.

TPC Sawgrass might be the next course with most years on PGA Tour.

La Quinta Country Club too, other than last year when only the two courses at PGA West were used when there was no pro-am portion due to Covid. Otherwise, LQCC has been used since 1963.

It's nice to know that the SONY Hawaii Open is the same age as me. Classy bunch, those '65s.

I wonder what Mr. Doak thought of the inability of some of the guys to putt yesterday. It seemed that they could not get the ball to the hole. I wonder if they were concerned about sliding past and having tricky return efforts, or if they simply underestimated the slope on those greens.

For those not in the know, Mr. Doak & Team refreshed Raynor's Waialae late last decade. For a year or two, the talking heads referenced the architectural bones and renewal, but they seem to have gotten away from it this year.

Considering that the PGA Tour starts each calendar year at C&C then Raynor, is wonderful stuff for our band of marauding melquiades.

There was a thirty year hiatus but the Wyndham (Greater Greensboro Open) has been played at Sedgefield since 1938.

Here is a January 1930 Golf Illustrated article describing the second annual Hawaiian Open at Waialae Country Club, won by Craig Wood:

I think it's only been held at Sedgefield roughly 40 years total, though, because for the first 20 years of the tournament they switched back and forth between Sedgefield and Starmount, and sometimes played Starmount 2 or 3 years in a row before going back to Sedgefield for one year. And then they moved to Forest Oaks for nearly 30 years, as you mentioned.

Torrey Pines goes back to late ‘60s I think.

Memorial at Muirfield village since  they built it.  What about Bay Hill for Arnold's event as well?

I remember that first event.  Primarily I remember huge clouds of smoke Matltbie exhaled as he tried to close out the tournament.

First Memorial was in 1976; first Bay Hill event was '79 I think.
