Rick,

We used to do North Carolina on my teacher break (3rd week February) and it was simply not worth it. You might get lucky and score good weather, but the two Pittsburgh guys in a Pinehurst tavern (not Ross' place) drowning their sorrows in Irish Car Bombs. Why? Their round on #2 had been snowed out. We went to South Carolina that day, from Pinehurst, to find an open course.

You have to go all in, and get below the frost line. I have zero skin in the resort game, so I'll leave it at that. Best of luck. Can't wait to hear of your adventure.

I was contemplating the exact same thing! I am thinking a few days in Charleston (originally had considered Birmingham also). I think a round at Charleston Muni and maybe the Ocean course one day. If Kiawah falls through I'll settle for Wild Dunes Links course. We go down to Florida a lot (in laws live in Fort Myers) so I'll save Streamsong for when I want to get out of the house for a few days. Much of this depends upon the weather.
Best Played So Far This Season:
Crystal Downs CC (MI), The Bridge (NY), Canterbury GC (OH), Lakota Links (CO), Montauk Downs (NY), Sedge Valley (WI)

We have spent months enduring thread after thread about $1,000 here, there and this and that. Each trip mentioned by this group is over 1K all in. Do any of you ever go on the cheap? I remember some real bargains in both Arizona and Alabama.

Rick,

Forget all those warm-weather destinations and come to Scotland! There are no visitors at the moment, the links are playing perfectly, and you'll get to see all the greats for a fraction of the cost. Turn that 3-day trip into a 7-dayer, and for the same £ you'll get some quality winter golf. Here's NB today:

Forget the golf. Wax your skis and head to Colorado.

Rick - what is your tolerance level in NJ for winter golf, 35, 40 or 50 degrees?  Also do you want to walk or ride?

I also kind of guess many of the recommended courses have few open prime tee times.

If you watch the weather in and around Atlantic City there is a good chance that you will get some good weather days to play at the end of February with a minimum of travel. Atlantic City CC, Seaview Bay and Twisted Dune is a nice lineup with a bunch of other options available as well. You have good restaurants and casinos not withstanding whatever Covid issues and restrictions are in place.

I included Orlando in post #5 above and included some good, inexpensive options (Southern Dunes, Winter Park 9, Deltona, Victoria Hills) that can be done as a three day trip with airfare, hotel and three or four rounds of golf for less than $1,000.

PS -  I didn't include Mystic Dunes 8)

Last winter i did 2 weeks in the MB / Charleston / Kiawah / HH area the last week of Feb / First week of March. Worked remote, played a lot of golf. Jumped from VRBO to VRBO. Weather was spectacular 60-75 and Sunny most days.

I visited Bandon in late February a few years ago and it was the ideal time of year, and a great value.

We play all winter done here as weather permits, and generally its not too bad as the sandy base of most of the courses helps keep it playable. Crump supposedly found the ground for Pine Valley on the train ride to ACCC in the winter.

So I will take the lead and try to figure out a good weekend (friday /saturday) for a little get together down here in February. Have to check the Farmers Almanac and the tide charts with my team of Sweeney, Trenham and Malone to figure the right weekend. But . I'm thinking it would be a lot of fun.

Ok , Rick , the winter open has officially started planning per your request! 8)

I like Pawley’s Island and Hilton Head area.  As long as you are not riding a cart you generally are ok unless it’s raining.  Lots of price point options to choose from.

The 2022 Farmers Almanac says sunny, mild for the 27th and 28th of February.  March 1-5 is predicted as Sunny, warm in the Atlantic corridor. Count me in for the Winter Open!

Rick:
I'm heading to Phoenix at the end of February with three other East Coasters.  We've noticed that tee times at the "better" public courses are very limited.  It also seems harder to get on certain private courses than in the past.  I am assuming that this is the result of a general uptick in golf demand, together with (perhaps?) fewer people traveling overseas.

Does the hotel where you are staying have two free drinks during happy hour included in your stay? You playing the Waste Management course?

   Three biggest lies in public relations:
   1) I’m leaving my job to spend more time with my family;
   2) I welcome this indictment to clear my name;
   3) the golfer who said “it wasn’t that bad out there.”

The public options aren't great but its hard to beat southwest Florida. Fly into Ft. Myers - great and efficient airport, and within and 1 1/2 hours you've got Naples, Marco Island, Sarasota. Just got back and the weather was perfect.

Like Rob said, I'm too scared of leaving the country right now. I know 2 people who had to stay extra 14 days in London due to a positive covid test. Cost them a fortune.
