Mountain Ridge
« on: October 06, 2021, 01:01:37 PM »
Mountain Ridge CC in West Caldwell, NJ will host the LPGA this week.  Work by Ron Pritchard has continued there with significant changes since Pat Mucci hosted members of the treehouse a few years ago.  The course has bounced around the bottom of Golfweek's Classic 100 list over the past several years but appears poised to gain ground based on the most recent work.

I was fortunate to play there a earlier this summer at a gathering in honor of Ron Prichard.  MR is so good.

Many years ago I had a day I will always remember at MR with Pat Mucci. A prince of a guy with a hell of  a golf game. Tremendous golf course.

The best, plain and simple -- and as a collection meticulously compiled. Not many of us here say it nearly often enough  -- thank you, Professor B, for a marvelous resource!

As good as Joe's pix try to do it justice, they simply don't pick up the countours on the greens nor the other nuances (fairway tilt, firm maintenance meld, consistent rough heights, etc..) of the course.

MRCC is an oft-overlooked gem in a state that is a veritable diamond mine of golf courses. Between the work of Ron Pritchard and the daily TLC from its superintendent, Cliff Moore it's easily comparable to quite a few more noteworthy courses. It is consistently one of the best conditioned 18's in the section.

Consistent tree-removal, mowing-line and green expansions have produced one of Jersey's most fun courses to play. I recommend you try to catch it on TV the next few days. It's been perfectly primed for the best women golfers to compete on.

PS...It is also undeniably in the top 2-3 clubs in the Met Section for quality and range of great food! ;)

I watch many of the LPGA events.  The LPGA site says the yardage will be 6600+.  That is close to the blue tees.  If it is firm during the tourney and if they go tough on pin positions, the winning score may be just a few under par.  Should be good viewing!

It already has been good viewing, and they are going low!  So much for my prediction.

Note:  for the tourney they have flipped the nines.

The Mucci-sponsored event I attended was 11 years ago and around 100 GCAers attended!  The food and the soggy round of golf were both spectacular.  Many of the greens have wild undulations similar to Old Mac in Oregon.  They were way more fun that frustrating....unless your putt was a little strong and rolled and rolled until it came to rest in a greenside bunker.

 ??? ???

Don't know if the practices on what yardage is being played has changed but the LPGA and Senior Tour used to publish erroneous
(longer) yardages all the time. Marketing , you know!

I'd be interested if anyone who knows Mountain Ridge would opine as to where they are playing from .

63 yesterday by the leader which is pretty damn good plus quite a few other scores in the mid to high 60s.

This year at Olympic I was unsure what the USGA would do for the setup of the US Womens Open. To my surprise, and I've played with LPGA players, they pushed the tees way up.  The rough was up but they had cut it way back.  The winning score was minus 4 by two players.

So my guess is it will be around 10 under at Mountain Ridge.
