I have not updated my site for a while. 


We have not been able to start the project in northern California yet due to ongoing permitting issues.  I have not given up on it happening, because the client hasn't, but the best case is that it will START in 2023 and open in 2025.


For better news:


St Patrick's is open as of this summer.
The Lido will have preview play summer 2022 and be fully open in the spring of 2023.
The third course at Sand Valley will be about a year behind the Lido - we will start next spring.
Te Arai (North course) will be constructed in 2022 and open in late 2023.


I've also just signed up a new project in Florida that might open at the end of 2023.

Sincerely, it is good to read of this many courses under construction or being reworked. All I see in western New York is trees coming down and Oncelers everywhere. Too much pavement.

Abbey Springs, originally a Killian/Nugent from 1970 is being redoine by Bob Lohmann and Todd Quitno, per their web site.  I think I played this course 40 years ago and it featured a par 4 literally going down a ski slope.  But it could have been another Lake Geneva area course.

As that article says, we don’t have a timetable for the par-3 course yet, since permits are pending.  I would guess it’s more likely to happen next winter, rather than this coming winter, especially with my commitment to be in NZ for a couple of months this winter.

Looks like it'll be up north in the Park City area, not far from the 2 courses at Promontory. Says it going to be designed by David Boyden. I have the next couple days off, perhaps I'll take a drive over that way and see what I can see.

Are the low new course opening no.'s for 2023 due in large part because there is still a lot of negotiating taking place getting contracts signed and permits approved for courses to be built between 2022 and and then? For example, were we to revisit this topic this time next year will the no. of projected new course openings for 2023 be substantially higher you think?

Honestly, the most difficult aspect of our business is we have no guarantees of when a project will start, and until it starts we are only guessing when it might open.


That being the case, I’m guessing the projected openings for 2022 and 2023 are all the courses where construction has already started.  It’s quite possible that some other projects that start next spring (especially in southern latitudes) will open later in 2023, but there’s no point in trying to project that until they actually start.

Thanks for the input. I guess what I'm trying to assess is if the increase in the number of new courses opening in 2021 and 2022 is the direct result of increased player participation due to COVID, i.e. the COVID Bounce and whether it's a short-term or long-term trend? The precipitous drop in new course openings in 2023 compared to 2021 and 2022 would indicate the bounce being short-lived, unless there are a lot of courses that could potentially open in 2023 that none of us are aware of due to them not being announced and or under construction at this time.


Ultimately what I'm driving at is will there be an extended increase in new course development or a new course boom the likes we saw in the mid 90's to mid 2000's (Tiger effect) or is what we're seeing now a temporary reaction to the increased numbers of people playing golf since COVID?

Will there be a boom?  Judging by the way my phone is ringing these days, yes.  I don’t think it will ever go back to numbers like twenty years ago - that whole period was a fever dream, and it led to a crash.  But my guess is you’ll see the number of new projects double or triple from the average of the past ten years.  I have only built five new courses in the USA since Old Macdonald, but I could sign up five more today if I could control when they would all get built.  (Not counting the four I’ve already committed to.)

Most of the calls lately have been from the south - Florida, Texas, South Carolina.  And one in Kentucky.

Thanks for the follow-up reply and great to hear your phone's ringing off the hook. That's music to my ears. I agree we'll never see a boom in new course construction the like's that took place during the Tiger year's, but I'm encouraged to hear that the market is rife with opportunity. I'm hoping this trickles down to those that haven't been involved in new course construction for a period of time and that archie's that have been surviving on course renovations and restorations have a crack at building something from scratch again, as it's good for the health of the course architecture community. I'm excited to see the fruit this bears and the great courses that emerge as a result.


Don't get me wrong, while course renovations and restorations are great topics of discussion, I'm more excited to hear reports and stories of new courses being built that I and others hopefully can play. All the best to you and your fellow brethren that are dependent on new projects for their livelihood. I'm excited to see what the future holds.

Thanks Paul.  Question would be how many new courses that are going to open are private vs. public? Also how many (if any) are municipal?  While exciting that new courses are opening, many here (myself included) would love to see municipal golf proliferate as that is the cheapest access to our game. Young people and new golfers introduced to the game via these facilities is a big key as golf is expensive.
