Mt. Anthony CC-Bennington, VT
« on: September 28, 2021, 09:12:52 AM »
Anyone played here recently? I searched the archives and found a few references with one being that Mungo Park was a greens keeper as well as there being speculation that he was also involved in the design. A. John Harvey is listed as doing restoration/renovation work back in 2010. I’m playing there over the coming weekend and would welcome any insights. Thank you.

Not recently. I played it once or twice probably 20 years ago. My lingering memory is lots of canted fairways. And a drop-shot par 3 with a green so far below the tee that it wasn't visible on the tee shot. I think you could only see the very back edge of the green.

Tim-
I have never played it but I know a lot of people who have and they pretty much have all said it's nothing special. In fact they kiddingly refer to it as "Mount Agony."
Hope you're well.

Anyone played here recently? I searched the archives and found a few interesting tidbits. The course has been in its present location since 1905 and Mungo Park was a greens keeper as well as there being speculation that he was also involved in the design. A. I believe Mungo Park is credited with the original 9 holes at St. Johnsbury GC after taking over construction from brother Willie.

Tim:

Mt. Anthony was originally founded in 1897, with a 9 hole course that was laid out by the greens committee and A. Ricketts.

Curious where the information about the 1905 date for its present location comes from?

I spent my 5 yrs. as a PGA Apprentice up in Burlington and never played Mt. Anthony until just a few years ago when my brother moved to Bennington.

I think Mt. Anthony is actually a super fun round of golf. Holes of "note":

1st - Tough opening tee shot that has to carry a lot of high grass with an approach to a green of interest.

3rd - Nice three-shotter along the river - unfortunately lots of trees hide the view - with some decent land movement.

4th - Lovely little short hole over the corner of the Walloomsac River.

5th - Longer par-5 with a tough back to front sloping green.

6th - Great short par-4 up the side of the big hill around with the course is laid out.

7th & 8th - Two more short and unique two-shotters over rambunctious property out to the corner of the lot and and back.

9th - A really neat risk-reward drivable par-4.

10th - A simple uphill dogleg left par-4 that asks for a hard draw with the fairway canting severely to the right.

11th - Almost the polar opposite of 10 - a downhill dogleg right hole.

14th & 15th - Two more short par-4's that are nicely routed around a drainage ditch and pond that make you think.

18th - A decent closer to a nice little home green complex.

It is a tough walk for sure, but I think a really interesting round on some wild terrain. I think and hope you will enjoy it!!

I grew up playing Mt. Anthony...It had a lot more trees back then. Holes 6,7,8 are side hill crazy.  11 and 12 nearly as bad.

Never the less it is fun and has great views of the valley and mountains.
