Move Over Hogan!
« on: July 28, 2021, 08:29:08 PM »
Very cool finish at the Pennsylvania Amateur at Merion today.  John Peters of Carlisle, playing in the last group, holed out on 18 for a 2 and a one stoke victory.  He used an 8 iron from 193 - today's 1 iron.

Saw that seemed from right of fairway, had to be a flier. No idea where the pin was. I’d imagine somewhere in the back.

Pin was same on Sunday at 2013 US Open.  I was yards away from Peters.  It was quite exciting.

His shot was from the fairway, not the rough (unless my brain is playing tricks on me!).  I don't know what club it was but it wasn't a flier.

I was there with Dr. Bausch about 15 yards away. Never seen anything like it and I was at the 1991 Ryder Cup.

Lastly the reaction of his playing partners Sheehan and Ellis who until then were tied for the lead at +1 was nothing short of the epitome of sportsmanship and admiration for the incredible shot he just pulled off.  High fives all around before they regained their concentration to try to sink their chip and putt to tie.

Also earlier on the short #13 Peters’ tee shot hit the pin and violently bounced into the rough.  He may have at that point thought luck was not on his side today.  Apparently it was the same ball that found the bottom of the hole on #18.

At that point all you can do is relent to whatever high force/being/act you believe in and enjoy the moment.

Yes, it was an 8-iron, according to the story in the Inquirer.

First of all, how did I miss Joe and Mike during that back nine?

Second; yes, 8 iron from the fairway...but...only trying to (and did!) fly it 175. Even that was a half club down hill, a full club of wind, and from a slight downslope so several factors helping skew the numbers.

I am a 165-170 yard 7 iron guy and this would have been no more than a 7 iron for me.

Thanks, Jim.

Last time I played there a few years ago teeing off from the tee adjacent to the 17th greenside bunker I had a 7-iron approach, so it definitely plays shorter than the yardage under the right conditions, particularly if you catch that speed slot on the upper right side of the fairway.

I remember! I believe you started a thread bemoaning that fact...

Hope you're well!

Did anyone see Goetzs shot from the quarry in front of 17?  Second best shot all day.
We have a pool and a pond, the pond would be good for you.

What other walk-off hole out victories from long yardage can you all remember?

Robert Gamez - 1990 Bay Hill - 175 Yard 7 Iron
Isao Aoki - 1983 Hawaiian Open - 130 Yard PW
Sammy Schmitz - 2105 US Mid-Am 290 Ace on a par 4

I did not see that shot as I walked with the last group the entire day.  But this allowed me to not only see the hole-out by Peters, but also to see just minutes earlier an all-world up-and-down from Jimmy Ellis on 17.
