Himalayas Type Putting Courses

I am trying to do some research on these and I have come up with this list of resorts with putting courses:
Pinehurst
Bandon Dunes
Gamble Sands
Erin Hills
Streamsong
Big Cedar Lodge
Sea Island
Pebble Beach
Diamante
Forest Dunes
Treetops

I am trying to get a good list of private clubs that have them.  Any help would be appreciated.

At Gamble Sands, they allow anyone to use the putting course free of charge.

The Danny Yates Putting Course at Bobby Jones is free to kids, $10 for adults.


Seems steep to me but then a bucket of range balls starts around $16, and nine holes starts around $32.

Ben, my local lower end range put in the Top Tracer tech and now buckets of balls are $32. ::)   (But I do like the tech, even if it shows I have lost more distance in the last five years than I could imagine......I say it's the chips in the range balls that reduce ball flight....yeah, that's the ticket!  It's my story and I am sticking to it!

Paul,


We designed Mt. Prospect CC (IL) 5 years ago to have a Family Putting Course.  They have very much a "private club in the community vibe" with kids often riding their bikes to the course-makes me genuinely happy to see.  Mt.P is a park district owned course, and worth seeing if you're nearby.


We also built one integrated into the Giant Green at Black Sheep back in 2000.  The overall green was nearly 2 acres and included areas generally designated for; the "normal putting green", the 27th Green and the 19th Tees. The area shaped for the Putting Course was about 1 acre, but the Golf Staff (Kevin Healy) did a great job using the entire area for fun even though the Putting Course, it was typically maintained at about .25" to .50".  The slopes were interesting, but the then Contractor shaped it in a hurry since it was literally the last thing done on the project and ended up dormant seeded and covered with Futera Blanket if I remember correctly.


Two years ago we (Esler Golf & Vintage Golf Construction) rebuilt the Putting Course at Black Sheep, and it is the only one in the Chicago Market that I'm aware of.   I spent an enormous amount of time shaping and fretting over slopes and transitions.  Even had the John Deere rep with our Super come out to make sure it was all mowable.   It is now spectacular, google earth has it partially seeded, and the separate shortage area to the west is growingin in that aerial, late 2019.


We're in discussions with two wonderful old clubs/courses; at one to restore/replace a Putting Course that once existed, at the other to Build a new one incorporated into the 1st Tee Putting Green Complex.


I've heard of one other Chicago area club that is considering a Putting Course.

Paul, you list Pebble Beach.  I hope and assume you mean the new putting course at The Hay there.  It is very good and free.

Thanks for your input.  I am trying to advocate for a large putting course at club I belong.  It would replace croquet courts that would be moved.  The putting course would be right nest to an outdoor bar and grille.  I think the revenue opportunity would be great just from alcohol sales.  With Covid, etc.  The golf course is getting crowded with a lot of new players.  I think it would be great fun, a revenue producer and relieve some of the crowding on the course.

Paul, on the private side there are three in AZ that come to mind.  Desert Highlands (their PR makes the dubious claim that it’s the oldest in the US), Forest Highlands and Tonto Verde all have putting courses in some form.

I have great memories of playing cross country bocce on that putting green on a trip that Jim Colton hosted.  The thing that made it ultra memorable is that it was the Sunday of the 2009 Open and we were coming in an out to see if Watson could pull it off. 

I don't know if they still have the bocce there, but it was more fun than just hitting hundreds of putts and it was a great way to spend time while holding a beverage.

Philly Cricket had plans to build a 1 acre putting course at the St. Martins facility a few years ago.  Unfortunately it never really got off the ground.   :'(

University of Virginia’s Birdwood golf course has a Himalayas putting course.


The Club at Lac La Belle in Wisconsin has a Himalayas putting course attached to the 18th green.

Belmont done here in Richmond VA as part of the first tee recently opened their 18 hole putting course. Allegedly the largest in the state. I was recently at Farmington in Charlottesville and know they have one under construction. Farmington private, Belmont public.

The green was about tripled in size when we built the Mulligan course.


I’m a huge fan of such facilities but would put in a word of caution on building one unless you are sure there are enough people hanging around to use it and justify the cost of maintenance.  My original one at High Pointe failed in that regard.  At a place like Bandon or Pinehurst with multiple courses and few other activities, it’s a no-brainer, but for a club with only 18 holes you’d want it to be a place where lots of members are hanging around to use the pool, etc.  I can’t imagine one generating traffic at, say, Pine Valley or Crystal Downs.

You can walk up and use Thistle Dhu with the caveat that you are a Pinehurst Resort guest.
