The current status of Cobb's Creek is that it is closed...The site for the Cobb's Creek project:[/size]https://cobbscreek.org/

The other publics within the city limits are:

1. Walnut Lane: https://golfclubatlas.com/courses-by-country/usa/walnut-lane/  My home course during law school. Short but interesting.  Designed by Alex Findlay and opened in 1940. A true " Executive" course- https://www.walnutlanegolf.com/

2. Juniata: My home course during high school. Conditions are always questionable.

3. John Byrne : Haven't played there in many years.

4. FDR: Closed.

Also, within city limits is the private Bala GC, a Flynn design.  Nearby, but not within city limits is McCall GC, formerly owned by Philadelphia Electric Co for their employees. Another Flynn design. opened in 1934 and is private.

https://www.balagolfclub.com/

Of course there are others in the 'burbs. A lot depends on where he is staying as traffic can be a major problem.

Is access to private clubs a problem?

Cobb's Creek is now closed, still waiting for the renovation.  A few publics close to downtown worth checking out:

Jeffersonville GC - Lots of recent work by Tyler Rae and Ron Pritchard to bring back more Ross features, it's very enjoyable over rolling terrain.

LuLu: Semi-private, another Ross that features lots of bold mounding and a great short par 3 volcano green.

Glen Mills - regarded as one of the better public courses in the area, a Bobby Weed design in a very serene setting that moves between meadows and woods.  I have not played it this year yet know it has seen a drop in conditioning since last year, am hoping that changes since it's a great course.  Should still be in pretty good condition regardless.

Riverwinds:  Just across the river in NJ and set next to the DE River, wind is usually a factor and it's a pretty good round even if not.  Low profile and a good deal of variety, I always enjoy myself more than I expect here.

JC Melrose - Have not played here in years, but an interesting history with Mackenzie and Maxwell.  The course was altered from road building decades ago but the greens are still a lot of fun and I enjoy a lot of the holes.  No idea how it has been playing recently though.

Further away from Philadelphia proper worth playing depending on location:

Wyncote - a heathland style wide open layout that maintains interest with its undulating and twisting fairways with a fair amount of blind shots and a few forces carries.  Has a nice cadence to it.

Pilgrim's Oak - A Hurdzan/Frye that's best characterized a farmland links; it's pretty far from downtown but if staying south of the city, may be worth checking out.

White Clay Creek.  An Arthur Hills design with lots of forced carries and a much more modern tournament tone to it, in Newark, DE.  Lots of raised greens that vary in size and, did I mention the forced carries?  Still, I find myself always coming back here.  I think I like the greens more than I realize.

Middletown CC needs to become the next Jeffersonville.

There is a TON of great terrain and commensurate golf upon it.

Good call.  I played it over a decade ago and is near a lot of my in-laws, so will have to go check it out again soon.

I think JC Melrose might be another good candidate for the next J-Ville too.

In Delco add Paxon Hollow.

The main question is where will the person be staying?

Some good suggestions, and Chris Mavros hit the best in the order I'd probably pick.

I've always enjoyed Wyncote in Oxford, PA.   It's down near the Maryland state line, and it was the #2 new public course in GD back in 1992 (I think).

I also like Twisted Dune (Archie Struthers) out on the Jersey shore in Egg Harbor Township (about 10 miles from the coast).

I've heard good things about Raven Claw, but drove up to check it out once and thought it was "house golf" - I'm used to playing in the open, and I feared for the homes' safety :)

I don't think Philly has a large number of really good public courses, most all of which were noted above..   I moved here from Portland, OR, which has a lot of really nice municipal and public courses.

Second for Jeffersonville.  Bargain of the area.  Big holes, small holes, some nice new bunkering with more to come, really interesting greens, nice shape. I belong to a very good private Flynn course, and I try to play Jeffersonville once a month.

Just played Jeffersonville and agree with this. Interesting question—- how does it compare to another Ross —-Lulu?

I live 5 minutes from Jeffersonville and play there A LOT. It’s a good course.

But I’d play LuLu 9/10 times. Maybe 10/10.

Generally, I'd say bold (LuLu) vs. subtle (J Ville), mainly dictated by the land.  JV was towards the end of Ross' career and during the Great Depression, so Ross was able to visit the site more often and tweak things as he saw fit, which seemed to always turn out well from the courses of his I've seen at least.  I enjoy them both but for different reasons.

I think I played Middletown a few years ago. Does it have about 4 driveable par 4's? If so, I didn't really like that course.

This year, I played the Bucks Club, which is pretty far north, I think, and I enjoyed it.

Lederach?

Going on four years of college outside of Philly... Played LuLu a few years ago when it was less than $70 a round, now it’s up to $100 and tough to get a tee time. Jeffersonville is not much easier to get a time but half the price, even less if just walking. I thought both courses were pretty equal, LuLu being a little better but you can’t go wrong, I go to Jeffersonville whenever I get the chance though.

Glen Mills is another solid track but I would play Jeffersonville and LuLu over it.

I think so. It's a Findlay. I love it. To each their own. 11-18 is as tough a stretch of golf as you can find in Philadelphia.

The Bucks Club is fun. The greens are based on the original Huntingdon Valley Course at Baederwood.

P.S. I grew up in Warminster.

Never heard of the Bucks Club. Looked it up and found the website confusing in some ways. They certainly present themselves as a "club" and you would not know it was public except for a couple of mentions within text on the pages. No obvious ways to book a tee time. Is the course worth a play? Joe Bausch's photo tour looks nice enough, front 9 looks quite interesting, back nine is obviously the new-ish part of the routing. Never heard anyone from the Lehigh Valley talk about it.

Also the name makes it impossible to search for in the discussion group.
