After watching today's 2nd Round with several drone or high overhead panoramic shots, I'm wondering if there are more, or old unused holes out on this tract in out of play areas?

It certainly appeared to my eye what could be several hole corridors or old greens complexes.

I went onto the clubs website to se if there was an older routing map without success.

This topic may have been previously discussed. If so, apologies in advance.

The routing is remarkably close to the original layout. There are some different holes such as 3, 5, 6, 8, 11 and some greens changed, but the flow of the course isn't much different.

The old 3rd and 8th holes (Sahara and Hades) were still being mowed out when I first played there in 1982 (they were moved in the mid-70s).  By the time of my return visit in the mid-90s they were much harder to locate.

Posting links from Instagram is beyond me but if you look at Joe McDonnell’s (joemcd_golf) post on 17 May there’s on overlay of the old par 3 8th hole on the current.  The Hades bunker is still apparent.

The sand disappeared a long time ago on the old 3rd...makes it hard to get the entire hole down. But it was an odd dogleg hole of maybe 250 yards. Probably a bogey 4 that became a par 3.

The Maiden is quite clear. The original tee was close to where the current 5th fairway runs out and played to the current 6th green, although the green has been redone.

The 8th skirts around Hades on the right rather than playing over it. Essentially the new version plays at something like a 90 degree angle across the old hole.

The 11th is really just a shorter version of the old hole.

Here are a few pictures of the Maiden as it used to play.  There are about 7-8 Royal St. George’s routing maps in the Compilation of Routing Maps thread spanning from 1888 to 1922.  The first picture below is from Christian in Reply #347.  The other pictures are from various sources prior to 1914:

A picture of the old Hades green which reminds me an awful lot of the 3rd green at Hotchkiss.

Hotchkiss School Golf Course 3rd green:

Then click on the Royal St. George’s link.  There is an 1888 routing in this collection along with many great photos.
