It gets really hot here in NC in the summer and umbrellas with a trolly are well advised but it is amazing to me how many people go through the effort of using an umbrella and the one they choose is black - in this case there is no excuse for stupid.

Whatever keeps you on the course and enjoying golf! I routinely walk underneath a silver umbrella attached to my powered “push cart” and also have adopted sun sleeves and a wide brimmed hat. In South Louisiana it is either raining, about to rain or sunny with 90+ degree temps and 90 degree humidity in the summer. My gear allows me to walk on all but the hottest days and coming out of the pandemic we can all use the exercise.

Black isn't the best, but I imagine the difference in temperature beneath a black umbrella and a white one is pretty small. Maybe nothing, as the white might let more sunlight through. Silver is probably best, but it's tough to find silver (reflective) umbrellas. Maybe silver doesn't like the rain much or doesn't deal with dampness well? Don't know.

My wife will often push my daughter's cart (when she's not playing, like pre- or post-round of course), and when I must, I fold the umbrella down otherwise I can't see.

Well, the Sun Mountain ones have a longer shaft, which helps, and I use a Kangaroo Caddy, which offers an extension for the umbrella holder.

Mine is navy blue.  Does that make me a lesser stupid?

I am already considered an oddity at my club for carrying my clubs at my age year-round.  The club is in the process of being sold to a company which claims that it doesn't charge for using privately-owned push carts.  Wait till I pull my ClicGear out of the attic, buy a smart umbrella, and don some of those pink sleeves.  I'll either be run out of the club or start a trend (I'd bet on the former).

A good number of the guys at my usual course wear sun sleeves. I was skeptical for a while, thinking they looked a bit goofy. But, really, they don’t look any different than someone wearing a long sleeve base layer under a short sleeve shirt… and, which of us hasn’t done that?

I was also told the sleeves keep you cooler in the heat with their wicking properties. So, I gave them a try. I liked them. They do keep your arm cool and, obviously, protected from the sun. I don’t wear them every time I play, but if the sun is blazing they are truly a comfort. And, as I said, don’t look any different than a long sleeve/short sleeve combo when it’s cold.

As for the umbrella… I’ve experimented with mine and the trolley a few times for rain and sun protection. It works fine, and I have no issue with the concept, but it seemed too much “bother” for me. I seemed to always be adjusting something and dodging the umbrella when the trolley was bouncing on rough ground. I like the idea of a taller umbrella specifically made for this purpose. That might work for me, but I still think the swaying on uneven terrain might be a problem for me.

 8)   At 6'-2" , needed a little longer umbrella for headroom for the sun mountain trolley, but found a relatively short piece of thin walled metal drain line (like for a sink drain) to put into the screws on holder tube and voila, DIY extension.  Didn't even have to trim the handle.

Lou,   You're probably OK with that "stylin" blue umbrella (now it doesn't have any maize color on it too does it?), and as with everything there are tradeoffs to test your mental acuity against.  Silver and white reflect more UV radiation, but dark colors absorb more, so If its UV protection you seek, both work.

Now I know you can run a little hot at times and can give or take a little heat...  ignoring conductive (touching) or convective heat transfer from the inside surface of the umbrella or any breeze while walking, the radiative heat transfer to you underneath the blue or any color umbrella (i.e., coupling) will be evaluated at absolute temperature of the surface taken to the 4th power (Stefan-Boltzmann law).  Yeh, it may feel a little warmer under that umbrella in dead of summer but probably not so bad in fall, winter and spring.

I'm 69 now, and LOTS of damage from a life in the sun.  I've spent a LOT of time with my dermatologist; freeze treatments, lotions, blue lights, biopsies, etc.  No MOHS yet, but I'm sure it's coming.
So a Coolibar wide brim, solar sleeves, sunscreen everywhere, AND an reflective umbrella on the Clicgear on hot, sunny days.  I don't have any hesitation about it, though occasionally I have to remind somebody who is using a golf cart that they aren't exactly toughing it out.  That usually does the trick.
Go out in the yard in July and see if it's cooler in the shade or in the sun.  Then test again by spending 4 hours in the sun, vs. 4 hours in the shade and report back.
Screw the guys making jokes about ball retrievers and iron covers and all of that.  There's no moral high ground here; only issues of heat exhaustion, dehydration, and skin cancer.  That isn't complicated.

My wife laughed at me for wearing long sleeve performance tee shirts in Florida. I get enough sun on the course. I don’t need any extra when I’m fishing or walking around.

I was hitting balls next to a guy wearing sun sleeves. I asked him about it. He had a skin cancer issue and always wore them. He took one off and his arm was covered in sweat. Surprised to hear they provide any cooling effect. Interesting.

Yes.

Plus, if you ever notice, the maintenance guys all tend to wear longer sleeves, pants, etc. Even when it's hot out. It's not only because they occasionally have to walk through thorny areas.

I never wear shorts, and much prefer long sleeve cotton shirts, rolled up to the mid forearm. And much to my wife and son's chagrin, I tend to bring with me a thermos of hot coffee instead of a bottle of ice cold water. Why? Because I saw a PBS documentary on the Bedouins when I was 13 or 14 years old: in the hottest and sunniest climates imaginable, they are covered head to foot, and drink small cups of hot sweet mint tea. [My grandfather, an Italian peasant farmer, also always wore long sleeve shirts and long pants 'to keep the sun off' and avoided cold drinks that 'shocked the system'.] If the experts in living in hot sunny places dress like that, why would I dress any differently?

 8)  Peter, read up on Paul Runyan (nicknamed "Little Poison"), he was quite the smart guy back in his heyday... his only use for cold water water was to soak in it before a round in hot humid conditions...

I find the 'sleeves' work well on hot, dry days, and my arms are cooler at the end of the day.

On humid days, the layer isn't great.  Luckily, it is a very rare day that I play in hot and humid weather.

And, surgery for melanoma isn't fun.  If you are lucky, it gets detected early and successful surgery is possible. I've had two succesful visits to the plastic surgeon so far, as well as many visits to my dermatologist for minor repairs.

After being grumped at by both a dermatologist and a radiation oncologist about sunscreen, I started wearing sleeves for both golf and cycling.  They are cooler, and even when it's humid, they have the effect of keeping sweat from your forearms from ending up on your hands.

I'm too cheap to pay $20+ for a pair of them, because they inevitably get snags, etc.  Also, if you play a lot, or in my case bike a lot.  You need several pairs so they aren't always looking grubby.

The last ones I got were from eBay, and cost $8 for four pairs with free shipping.  I really want some that look like full-sleeve tattoos but my wife says she'll strangle me if I do it.

Maybe all you guys who think sun sleeves look unmanly would be happier with these, and they're only $12.99 for a 12-pack:

I started wearing long sleeve shirts when putting applying lotion was like basting my arms. The only times I have packed an umbrella for overseas trip was a silver one to Australia and New Zealand.
