Lanark GC: A photo which intrigues me!
« on: July 08, 2021, 04:10:13 PM »

We’ve mentioned and chatted about Lanark a few times here over the years. Old Tom followed by Braid. A few GCAers have even ventured into deepest, darkest Lanarkshire to play it. I grew up about 15 miles from it and am ashamed to say I’ve never been.
This photo, posted on FB today by a young member of the ‘Golf Courses of Scotland’ group (I share with his permission), after his awesome hole-in-one on the 18th (one of the other par 3’s). I couldn’t help but be struck by the look of this hole. Very golden age USA, wouldn’t you agree?

I NEED to get there soon.
Cheers,
F.

If I recall there is also a good bit of Bernard Sayers in there as well and perhaps a touch of John McAndrew. As to your suggestion on the US feel, I agree. Indeed, even though I was last there only a couple of years ago I'd have struggled to name the course. I'd probably have worked out is was Scotland, as much due to the skyline as the colour of the sky, but it might have taken me a while.

That the 7th, with the 8th behind.

I like Lanark. There's some quite rambunctious terrain that rears into the middle of the round. Of the highlights: the 11th drops downhill, and then drapes beautifully over a shoulder towards the semi-blind green; the 14th green sits deceptively perched, beyond a quarried hollow; the last green used to be tucked tight beyond a rough, gravel track, but now that has been rubberised, it doesn't quite have the same charm.

I married a girl from just down the road. I am not giving up my Links Ticket, but if I ever did, Lanark would be the place to join. A "Doak 5" and one of the best inland courses in Scotland.

I’d be up for that Marty.  My club has a reciprocal with Lanark and I was just looking at it the other day.

I'd be very happy to tag along for any Clan gathering.

Clyde - I'm a bit surprised you rate it so highly. Lanark always had the rep as being top 3 in Lanarkshire along with Hamilton and Strathaven/Bothwell (take your pick between those two) when I was growing up and I certainly enjoyed it as a boy but having played it a couple of years ago after an absence of a few decades I was actually a bit disappointed. Not really as good as I remembered and certainly in my mind not one of the top inland courses in Scotland. Still very much worth a play but not all that.
