Best golf course to take a walk on
« on: June 18, 2021, 09:40:58 AM »
How does this contrast with the actual ranking lists?

I suspect CPC will be a runaway winner with Pebble next. From my experiences, Shinnecock then Royal St Georges maybe.

Certainly the links and mountain courses will shine...

NGLA and Maidstone are great walks but I belonged to two courses where the walk was just wonderful: Four Streams and Musgrove Mill. MM winds around marshes and a river. It is a great walk. There just are hundreds of them around the world. The European Club is A stunning walk and one of my favorite places in the world. I have played dozens of rounds there and never tire of it.

The wilder and more natural the better for me. I'd say Askernish.

Oh, Jim -- you're so literal, and lacking in imagination!
I mean: when we talk about 'walking' a golf course we don't mean actually using our feet!
Ha! Don't you see: it's not a reference to some autonomously self-generated bipedal motion as opposed to, say, riding in a motorized cart.
No, no -- you've got to get over that, friend. Yours is an antiquated and narrow and definitely much too concrete a definition.
Think of the concept much more as an "As if" experience instead, e.g.
Which golf courses would be in the Top 10 that currently aren't if they had to be played "as if" using autonomously self-generated bipedal locomotion?
Do you see? I'm probably not explaining it well, but hopefully Tom D will chime in soon.
Btw, and needless to say: don't look to Golf Digest for such a Top 10 list -- its panelists just don't seem to get it!

If you aren't from LA, then a walk around Wilshire is a pretty fun day.  Famous landmarks abound.  The walk around both Blackwolf Run courses is pretty great.  Also, an early morning or late afternoon walk around either Stonewall course is pretty serene.

If following the courses routing is a prerequisite then Royal Dornoch would be nice. Even following it in reverse would be pretty cool.

I agree with the post about Blackwolf Run, particularly the River Course. And although I have not played either in years, Cascades and Bedford Springs still strike me as great places to walk among courses not on the water. Primland would be another although a tough walk if you are actually playing.

Joe, I completely agree with Wilshire. Walking around Larchmont Village is one of my favorite walks in LA and then walking around Wilshire is so much fun. A surprising amount of movement for it being in the heart of the city.
I'd nominate Swinley Forrest with a dog or two as a pleasant walk

Rockaway Hunting Club-The way Woodmere Channel and Brosewere Bay are incorporated into the routing along with a stroll through an intimate little neighborhood make this a particular favorite.

I guess if you walk Ballyhack, Primland isn’t so tough to walk.

if i were walking I'd prefer even fewer distractions than when I play
I haven't been to Rock Creek, and I'd guess the remoteness and expanse would both add to this likely great walk

The figure 8 routing for NBWL takes some beating. You have to choose between looking at the sea or the course as thou stand on the first tee. and you haven't played it enough until you've made a 4 from the beach on 2.

You get a rest on 4 but the view from the tee on 5 is all world.  8, 9& 10 are also restful but from the green on 11 to "perfection" the beach is an ever present danger. Looking down 17 at the Bass Rock is my favourite view in golf. And on the tee of 18 you take in the whole bay, the harbour, the town and it's just.........

The golf course is a gentle walk and the 'test' ain't too shabby either.
