Saturday’s 36 hole final commencing at 8.30am will air live on The R&A’s YouTube and Facebook channels as well as RandA.org.

For one thing, the usual 288-man starting line-up was cut in half. And for another, a ‘card count-back’ rather than the traditional preliminary round was used to break what turned out to be a 16-way tie for 58th place and determine the last seven of the 64 qualifiers for match-play.

Wait. Hang on a minute. Let’s take another look at the last sentence in the previous paragraph.

A ‘card count-back’ – a system more commonly employed in monthly medals at clubs across many lands – in a national championship? Surely that can’t be true.

I watched the Women’s final which R&A also streamed last weekend on YouTube.  It was much more enjoyable then network golf.  Although the presentation was quite basic, it presented the aspects of the match and the course as good as I needed, and without any commercials or other junk.  If you want to see all of the course at Barassie, I think you can still watch the match on YouTube.


Also, Barassie looks like an incredible course that would be a fine addition to a golf trip to the Troon area.

Yes, not great-really don't understand that.


In the British Open Championship Regional Qualifiers, alternates were/(maybe still are) decided by random draw of those tied at a certain score(missed by one or lost playoff for proper spot).
I was fortunate enough to be drawn #1, and our site was drawn #1, putting me first in line of about 70 alternates for the 4 Final Qualifiers.
I was into the final Q in a matter or hours(took Retief Goosen's spot in the program;) which disappointed a few spectators), but many,many alternates got into the Final Q.

The picture quality of this broadcast when viewed on an iPad is amazingly good. And the production and ground level camera work, no gantry’s, is first class.
Makes me wonder about the use of this approach for broadcasting similar events in the future.

PS - nice to see at least one of the key participants not wearing a hat …. and especially not wearing one of the these days seemingly ubiquitous baseball cap!

Oh my goodness. Shepherd is 8 down after 17 and wins on the second extra hole. Heart breaker for the loser.

Why don’t caddies use trollies on the pga tour?  Are they legal?

Because you need two hands to caddy properly - and you can't walk straight onto the greens.

Part of the rules/terms that you sign up for on the various tours, you have to have a caddy and he carries. A lot of other rules too...shorts/ talking to media / not allowed to bad mouth the course. (cue Tommy Bolt story).


As the tour tiers get lower you can even carry your own clubs.
