OT- Best rainsuit in the market
« on: May 25, 2021, 01:06:34 PM »
My top-of-the-line Foot-Joy Gortex rainsuit didn't last the fist 15 minutes of steady rain yesterday.  I've followed the instructions to revitalize the rain protection using an expensive solution recommended by the manufacturer.  What are the best suits available in the market today?  I would particularly appreciate opinions based on experience in areas of heavy weather, e.g. Ireland, Scotland, Bandon, etc.

I have rain pants made by Berghaus that are sturdy. I also have found Sonderland gear to be great but I have not tried their rain suits.

JK,

Nice try, but as forever members of Costco, I know that it is not an option there. A weird fact: Costco’s predecessor was The Price Club. For many years, I assumed it was a reference to the discounted prices. Until I met Sol Price who was the founder. Wonderful guy.

We pay for our staff’s annual fee because we found it is a barrier to shopping there even though they know the savings probably make up for it. It is one of our most cost effective “perks”.

Kjus is very good, but very expensive:

Kjus is the best on the market by FAR.
Yes, it is expensive. But, the thread asked for the "best", not the most cost-effective...;-)

1. It's light.
2. It stretches
3. It's "quiet"....and that can be an issue.
4. Great style.
5. 100% waterproof.

Brenden Grace and Shane Lowery both wore them when they won the Open.

Kjus now makes fully waterproof pants that actually wear like pants but with rain suit material so you dont need anything else.

Kjus is now based in Boulder, CO.

Yeah big time. I got a jacket as a gift, BUT about had a heart attack when I got it snagged on a thorn branch and it ripped. My heart sank like I just got pulled over by the cops.
Also I have had good luck with my Footjoy Gore Tex suit, done well for almost 10 years.

I can tell you what the most expansive one is...

Last fall we were on a several day trip to Pinehurst and the day we were playing #2 the prediction which was spot on was for deluge of rain all day long, at times falling an inch or two an hour.   Totally unprepared, I bought the Pinehurst logo rainsuit with the Payne Stewart type cutoff sleeves and umbrella to the tune of about $750.

The good news is that they worked very well.   The bad news is I can't afford to ever go again.  ;)

I have never seen Foot Joy Gortex. Any brand is okay but make sure it is Goretex otherwise it won't breathe and be unbearable if the temperature is up.  golfanything.com has Galvin Green at good prices but very limited selection.  PGA Tour Superstore also carries Galvin Green in some of their stores and every once in a while they go on sale.

I have FootJoy Goretex, and it's kept me warm and completely dry in both Scotland and Ireland ... and New England in the chilly, wet spring.

I left a rare XXXL Galvin Green rain jacket on the back of a poker chair in a small casino. When I realized that I had lost the jacket a week later and went back to lost and found it was sitting right there. I'd like to chalk it up to the kindness of strangers but most likely need to thank the eye in the sky.

There’s likely a damn good reason Galvin Green kit is extremely popular amongst serious golfers in wet and cold and windy U.K. .... and it’s not coz it’s cheap, in fact it’s anything but cheap.

I have two rainsuits and am looking at them right now.

FootJoy rain suit is like a potato sack made from industrial garbage bag material. Fits like a pair of 1980's pleated baggy pants.

Kjus rain pants has a very contemporary look/feel/cut, etc and state of the art fabric from a proprietary source in Asia. Makes Goretex look like gabardine.

Galvin Greene may be sold at PGA Superstore, but Kjus is at every top 200 course out there for a reason...;-)...and that IS part of their marketing strategy. Most Kjus pieces will have club logos on them. At ~$900 per suit, they are sold to the audience that has the money and wont barf at the price tag. Kjus is not mass-marketing. They would decline a relationship with big box stores just like Peter Millar does.

But, Kjus is also not a big seller to the larger framed or "roomier" golfer...;-)
Euro styling, slimmer cuts, tapered legs...not a great fit for the "Dad-bod" crowd...;p-) They buy Galvin Greene and then say they hate Kjus when, most likely, they tried on Kjus and it was like a sausage casing... ;D ;D

Exactly why Kjus is NOT sold at any Trump properties. Didnt fit the Trumpasaurus himself... ;D ;D

I have to echo the Galvin Green props.  I have several wind and waterproofs.  They are very expensive but I my mind, worth it.  Nice to hear that KJUS is good too.

If you are going to order Galvin Green, order one size larger than you wear as it runs small.

Don’t buy at a box store. A good rain suit must come with a great memory. Perks you up a bit every time it’s pulled from the bag.

Fatty alert!!! Galvin Green currently has one XXXXL piece in stock on their website. I wish I had a need.

I had a Galvin Green jacket which was very expensive circa £350 seven or eight years ago. After around 5 years I played in really heavy rain and the shoulder seams leaked. GG have a lifetime guarantee and the jacket was returned via my pro, within a couple of weeks a brand new jacket arrived. They maybe expensive but they are great waterproofs and even after 5 years the guarantee is for real.

I have tried the sunderland, Bogner, Foot joy, and others, BUT, on a golf trip to Scotland 20 some years ago, the "professional caddies" at both Muirfield and The Old Course wore Galvin Green and I bought a Payne Stewart style top(short sleeves) and later pants to match...did not have to replace them for about 20 years.  They are really good pants for very windy days without rain to keep the lower body warm too.

Another vote for Kjus. I have Galvin Green, Footjoy, Zero Restriction and a couple of others in my history and the Kjus is comfortably the best. So comfortable you almost want it to rain (not quite). As noted above though, it's very expensive.

I misspoke about my FJ Gore-Tex, it is actually a "Titleist Collection" Gore-Tex (made in Hong Kong) which cost north of $500 over 10 years ago.  I also own two Zero-Restriction Gore-Tex long sleeve tops, a Sunice, a Sunderland, two FJ summer mid-sleeve StaDry tops, and a Zero-Restriction mid sleeve top.  All are water resistant for a brief shower at best.  The Titleist fits and feels as Ian describes.

The KJUS website is like shopping at Fry's Electronics, way too many choices and limited descriptions.  I will keep my eyes open when I visit a high-end club and try one on.  Sounds like Galvin Green might be a good choice as well.  It makes more sense to buy an expensive rain suit if the quality justifies the price than to keep purchasing cheaper items that don't keep me dry.

Thanks for the recommendations.

The Pro 3L 2.0 is the suit you want if you want the top notch stuff. The Dexter is pants and jacket that pack down to about the same size as a 3 pack of golf balls and it weighs virtually nothing. That's the one you get, stick it in your golf bag and forget about it until it rains when you're not expecting it to. The Pro 3L is what you stick in your bag when you know it's going to rain. Otherwise I think it's mostly colors. The hard part with the Kjus stuff is figuring out the right size, but their size guide on the site is pretty decent.

The reason is because they haven’t discovered Kjus yet.

I wanted to buy a Kjus top, but could never get a deal. As soon as GG sold normal colours and put it on sale I bought it. It was about £150. So far, no issues in serious rain except it is noisy.

There are degrees of waterproof. This chart should help in deciding which kit to choose.
