Iona

Is BUDA at Iona a possibility?  That would be awesome.  We might even be a big enough group to get them to mow the greens a couple of times before we arrived!

I don't know enough about the logistical challenges, but will definitely do a bit of research. I love the idea.

Maybe combine with Ardfin, and encourage everyone to just look at the average cost per day.  ;D    (yes, I know the two aren't close to each other)

Didn’t Buda at Painswick attract media attention?
Might even be the opportunity for on-course commentary of an Iona Buda by a lady called Iona (see SkySports etc). :)

But then it wouldn't be Iona. It would be a tricked up presentation of the course.

Hopefully they would provide green reading books..
and everybody coming from the US could bring a suitcase full of crushed quartz so the bunkers were well presented.

They mow it for the Iona Open don't they?

Also, Jeff, I don't think they have any bunkers, so you don't have to worry about BYO sand.

I'd love to have already have played every course, but my name isn't Paul Rudovsky.  :)
...

Heck, even I've played two on his bucket list, and I don't play anywhere.

My GB bucket remains firmly centred around Sunningdale (both Old and New), although Lytham, Birkdale, Turnberry, Western Gailes and Cruden Bay are all clear gaps too as is Addington inland. Ireland is a massive lacuna, with the  distinguished exceptions of all three Portrushes (although I haven't seen the new holes in the flesh), Portstewart and Dollymount. So RCD, Portmarnock, Lahinch, Ballybunion, County Sligo and County Louth would all be on the list, as would Ashburnham, Prestatyn, North Wales, Tenby and (of course!) Welshpool in the principality.

As for a Top Five achieved, leaving out the current Open rota then Prestwick, Westward Ho!, Alwoodley, Macrihanish and Brancaster will always loom very large, as will (to cheat) Silloth, Deal, Formby (Men's and Ladies) and Rye.

I recall a Peanuts quote that went “everywhere I go, there I am”  when it  comes to golf it seems that my view is  “everywhere I look, there I want to play”.  At 75 I now more often go where I find friends and then look for golf.
There is so much great golf out there that I want see or see again. I hope to meet some of you there.

Very well said Jay.  At 68 I’m feeling the same way.  I just enjoy playing and if it is a special course I haven’t played and I’m with friends (even ones I just made on the first tee) it is that much better.

Jay,

That's a great perspective and I feel similarly.   I'd only add that as I approach age 63 having played 1,165 courses to date, many of them very special places I never dreamed would be possible for a lower-middle class kid whose dad's dad died in the mines when my father was only six weeks old, I would paraphrase Chico Escuela and say "golf has been berry, berry good to me."

Somewhat oddly, these days when seeking out new courses I find myself mostly interested in finding something with historical interest as well as ratty old munis, par three courses, ancient nine-holers, and returning to places I played as a kid.   Truth be told, as I celebrate my 50th year of playing golf this coming July, I'm pleased to report that I'm just as excited to step on the first tee of any course I've never played before as I did when I was a kid, only now tempered with the reality that some courses will remain only distant dreams.   That's ok.  I'm a very fortunate and grateful guy.

It was a joke Tom. Judging by pix, Iona looks unusually hairy.

Mowing at Iona comes with consequences: more dung to navigate and from which too extricate.

Since anything over a 1 hour drive is geographically undesirable to me, I am pretty much limited to Suffolk County, NY.

Southampton Golf Club
West Hampton CC
Southward Ho CC
Fisher’s Island GC
Shinnecock Hills GC
Laurel Links CC
Bethpage Red (Nassau County but close enough)
Baiting Hollow GC
Long Island GC
Quogue Field Club
Hay Harbor Club

Going to Fisher’s would involve a trip on my nephew’s boat with a stop for fishing.  A perfect day!

I guess it’s a sign of the times that in a thread rife with access opportunities I see no real attempts at same. There could be something so subliminally ingenious that I missed it but I don’t think so. COVID-19 hasn’t been kind to the access play.

Rather than provide such a vague answer as my first attempt, perhaps I can answer this easier if I just name ten courses I intend to try to play this year.

Prout's Neck
Castine
Copake
Kahkwa
Glens Falls
Knollwood
Apawamis
Stafford
Grover Cleveland
Bald Peak Colony or Hooper
