Starting from the clubhouse or a short walk from clubhouse

1. 15-18 Cypress Point
2.  1 and 2 at Riviera
3.  1, 12, 13 and 9 at Riviera
4  10, 11 and 2 at Riviera
5.  3 and 18 at Riviera
6. 10 and 9 at Riviera

It must be kept in mind that the elusive charm of the game suffers as soon as any successful method of standardization is allowed to creep in.  A golf course should never pretend to be, nor is intended to be, an infallible tribunal.

I am only counting "loops" that come back close to where they start.

Favorites from a couple of my designs:

Pacific Dunes 3-4-5-6, or 1-2-7

Ballyneal 10-11-12-9

or, The Loop, any holes you want to include, forwards and then backwards  8)

2 through 4 at Grover Cleveland Golf Course, Buffalo, NY. I grew up sneaking onto the course, under or over the fence, and really learned the game on those two long 4s and medium 3. Around and around we went, until the ranger called the cops.

I like the sentimental pick. Grew up working at Town & Country in MN, which has two fantastic loops that both start and end at the "clubhouse".

1, 2, 3, 9 (par 4, par 3, par 3, par 4) and 10, 11, 17, 18 (par 4, par 3, par 5, par 3).

I love all of the Riviera suggestions: 1-2, 9-10, and 10-11-2

LACC North 10-16-9 you could always add 15 if you wanted

Soule Park 3-4-7 or 11-12-13

If you're feeling masochistic Winged Foot West 1, East 17-18

Huntercombe has a lovely 1-5 stretch and like Burnham and Prestwick the start and finish is near the house.

I have played Sean's Huntercombe loop more times than I care to admit, usually after a proper Huntercombe lunch. At least two all-England holes and one all-World green within that sequence. But my favourite loop personally is 15-17 at Harlech (which can be 14-18 if you are feeling a bit more energetic). 15-18 at Prestwick is likewise fairly fab. And all are easily clubhouse-accessible.

The loop 16, 3, 15 on the West Links starts and finishes reassuring near my front door. :)

Starting and ending near the clubhouse, 1-4 at Pine Valley must take some beating. 14-16 at Shinnecock too. Tough stretch. NGLA 1, 2, 17, 18.

Without the clubhouse connection, a few from Walton Heath I think are pretty solid:

2N, 15O, 16O
3N, 4N, 14O
13O, 14N
12N, 13N if you're feeling spritely and want a challenge
7O, 8O, 9O

If you go out there on an evening in the summer, you can play virtually anywhere from 3 holes to 18 holes with relative ease, starting on 1 and finishing on 18

Back at my first club, Canyon Crest in Riverside, we used to play 1, 2, 3, 4. We called it "The Horn" and I must have played it 200 times. It was just the right length and with just the right amount of variety. 4 holes where:
  • Out from the clubhouse, a semi-tough opener dogleg left of about 390 yards, water all along the left and a creek barranca in front.
  • Across the street to a fun, short par 5 with a cross-hazard that was situated at just the right distance in front of the green to where it always tempted you to cover it, even if you didn't hit a perfect drive (this was when I was younger and hit it 275 to 285).
  • Turned back to the clubhouse with a short, tight par 4 with a giant sycamore and a barranca left and houses right. A good tee shot was required for sure. And then...
  • 185 yard par 3 from a slightly elevated tee, with water short and left.
Not the greatest course in the world, but boy did I used to love playing there in my 20's and 30's.

When I went to work at the NCGA, the Executive Director invited me out to Cyoress my first weekend there.  He said to get there at 8.  We were to play with two of his friends from LA.

It turned out the Ladies Club Championship was that weekend so the first tee was booked for a while.  The pros were sending guys out to various holes on the course to play.

The boss came to us and said we were starting on 15.  I was a little sad to be playing those holes first.  Then he said, “We’ll play 15-18 and then 1-18, but you’ll have to give the caddies a little extra.”  No problem!😉

Or 7-5-6, or 9-10-18 . . . both easily accessible from the clubhouse.  But the North course is rarely so busy that you can't just skip around and play however many holes you want.

Yes, let's hope. I am booked for 24 June, but wouldn't mind crossing the Wall before then.
