Favorite 2 or 3 hole loops?
« on: March 10, 2021, 08:03:50 PM »
I was wondering what some of your favorite 2 or 3 hole loops are, either within the normal routing of a course, or with neighboring holes on a front and back nine that can be played consecutively on a loop. I always find it enjoyable to have the option to replay a couple great holes when the course is wide open or late in the evening, and the routing easily allows for it.

Some of my favorites:

#7 and #8 at Sand Hills. I don't think either need much explanation.

#6 and #7 at Bel-Air. I know Tom has stated previously that these aren't the strongest holes out there, but I have to agree with what Allan Long said previously in another post. I found them both to be immensely fun.

#15 and #16 at Interlachen CC (MN). #15 calls for a fade off the tee, and #16 calls for a short draw around the corner. Both have interesting green complexes and are a nice juxtaposition.

Would love to hear some of your favorites!

Seems like a zillion years ago but I recall playing down the 1st and up the 18th at TOC.
Mind it was a winter Sunday and we were using a football!
Kept off the greens but still got a few odd looks!:)

I could see myself boozer looping around 15-18 at Prestwick.

1, 2, 17 & 18 at Burnham would be entertaining.

Never Going to Happen:

7-8-9 at CPC

Could Happen:

7-12-17-18 at Mid Pines

4-5-12 at Pac Dunes

2-3-4 at Streamsong Red

There must be a cool loop using SS Red and Blue holes.

Brooklawn in CT has several, due to its compact routing:

1,2,11
1,2,9,10,11
12,13
17,18

All start and end at the clubhouse.

But the best is 14,15,16.   Also starting and ending at clubhouse, and very often used for late day, post cocktails, in the dark, 3 club barefoot scrambles....😀

 I missed your point.

Since Jeff took 3/4/2 at Rolling Green I’ll take 10, 11,9. That’s a 200 yard par three slightly uphill then a 400 yard elevated tee par four followed by a relentless uphill par five.

I'm going to kneel at the Mike Devries alter of worship=Cape Wickham, holes 16-18. Of course all with the crashing ocean waves to your right.

  • 16 - Great approach to an infinity green.
  • 17 - Medium length par 3, LOVE this green, with a bump in the middle and built into the side of the hill so remember everything breaks to the ocean. ;D
  • 18 - My favorite hole, is this heaven? You can cut off what you can chew and this green again has quite a bit of slope. Like the back pin positions here, just a tremendous finish to a truly wonderful course. Thank you Mike.
This course is one of my definite top 10 and probably top 5. If it was in California it would equal Pebble Beach, and I think have some holes that rival Cypress (haven't played there).

Favorite late day Mid Pines loops:
1,6,17, 18
1,6, 7, 12,17,18
1,6, 7, 12-18
Unfortunately recent COVID late day volume has made the loops rarer.
12 through 18 I feel is the best finishing stretch in. the Sandhills.

Pinehurst #2 - 4&5. A perfect par-9 where you could easily flip the pars as the teeing areas are all still pretty much there to play each hole with either par.

3-4-5-6 also would be a great loop.

10, 11 and 15 at Beverly. Proximity to the 19th hole is a bit of a factor. 10 is a 185 yard par 3, 11 is a 600 yard par 5 and 15 is a 460 yard par 4 that brings you right back to the clubhouse.

12, 13 and 14 at Olympia Fields North.  12 is the beginning of a beguiling finish that is complicated by the creek 90 yards or so from the green. 13 is the connector hole that is like a short bridge to the dramatic 14th, quite possibly the best par 4 in Chicagoland. 14-16 is also very special.

I like 12-13-14 at Oakmont.

Also, 13-11-12 at Pumpkin Ridge’s Witch Hollow.  13 is just over a short bridge fro the 1st tee which is why I’d start there.

Both are combinations of a par 3, 4 and 5.

2 through 4 at Grover Cleveland Golf Course, Buffalo, NY. I grew up sneaking onto the course, under or over the fence, and really learned the game on those two long 4s and medium 3. Around and around we went, until the ranger called the cops.

8, 9, 10 at Yale!!!!

Three great holes but not convenient to the house. I’ll nominate these which offer a shortish walk to the first hole in each sequence and finish around the house.

1,2
3,4
1,9
5,6,2
10,11,18

12, 13 at Lakeside -- two delightful, short par-4's, both requiring very accurate approaches.

15 (short), 16, 17 at Lakeside. 15 is such a fun, but potentially diabolical 75 yard hole. 16, evidently Hogan loved (definitely one of my favorite holes on the course) and 17, since the shaved the right side and expanded the green, is just fantastic.
