There clearly is a distinction between the low-, moderate price course and the resort course.  IMO the cost of the travel, lodging & food has to be included in the cost of the golf.  So destination resort golf is quite expensive.


Tom, I read another plug for Riverfront.  I live 12 minutes from it and has been my home course since 2004.


That is why when I travel, I am particular where I play.  Why go to the trouble & expense for inferior golf?

Keney Park, Hartford.  However, the abundance of league play tying up the course most afternoons could make the goal of daily play frustrating at best, if not unrealistic.

Would love to be corrected, but it's hard not to think the Red punches way above its weight simply because it's the 2nd best public within 60 mins driving of NYC and because it sits in the middle of one of Golf Architecture's two meccas.


Like the Black, the greens on the Red are just flat out boring (9 might be the only exception). The bones are very much there, but it seems to suffer from some of the same long-term maintenance practice issues that plague the Black, especially the fairway mowing lines on holes like 9 and 13. For every great hole (1, 6, 13, 18) there's one that puts you to sleep while you wait 20 mins on the tee box (2, 3, 11, 14). Plus if you spend enough time at Bethpage, you'll get really sick of playing the same Par 3.


How about a plug for Belvedere in Northern Michigan??

Eliminating pricey resort courses, I'd say:
Belvedere
Bethpage Black (from the appropriate tees)
Rustic Canyon (#1 choice)
U of M (marginally a public course)
And a bit of a sleeper: Roseland Golf and Curling in Windsor, Ontario.

Glad to see Keney mentioned, and glad to hear it's serving its function as a well-supported local course. It's terrific.


I've played them just once, but I found myself thinking I'd be thrilled and lucky to have Diamond Springs (MI), Ft. Myers CC (FL) and Charleston Muni (SC) as home courses after playing them.

If they could ever solve the pace of play problem of the first 4-5 holes, Rec Park in Long Beach, Ca might be my choice. It might have a good half dozen shots I enjoyed playing when I lived out there.


Will never forget playing Rec Park with Tommy Naccarato. That was a real treat.

I'll stick to my home state of Illinois.


Cog hill is pricey but a pleasure to play, not perfect after the Rees renovation, but still a very good test.  Too penal now for everyday play.


Sentimentally I'd say Innwood in joliet as i grew up playing there and my dad still works there one day a week. Nowhere near great architecture, but has some character and there are two greens with a lot of slope.


Probably my choice is Kankakee Elks which is forgiving and not long.  I would hope it gets a restoration at some point in the future as it really deserves one.

I think had I settled in South Bend that I'd have been fairly happy playing the majority of my golf at Warren. But only if I could have Studebagels for breakfast beforehand.

I think I'm getting old.


There isn't a course I want to play every day.  I'm not playing in shit weather anymore.  I know that's probably not the point of the thread, but I guess I don't really know of a public course I'd want to play everyday in any weather.


This year I played a round when it was in the 30's/40's and told my wife I'm not playing unless the temp is in the 50's when I tee off.


Similarly unless I'm on vacation I'm no longer playing in a constant rain.


If you lived in Bandon, would you really want to play it every day?  Maybe you love the wind and rain, but I sure don't.  Same goes with golf in the UK/Ireland.  When on vacation I take the weather as it comes and I guess it's part of the fun but no way I'd play on days that I have, if I could play the course on a better weather day.

In no particular order:


Pasatiempo - the highlight of my 2013 golf trip to California that also took me to the Pebble Beach properties, Presidio and Lake Merced GC in SF and The Preserve in Carmel. 


Streamsong Red - my favorite of the three on property.  I favor it over Sand Valley for intangibles I just can't put my finger on. 


Ross Course at French Lick - my favorite Ross course and just a blast to play.  Great piece of rolling property and wonderful greens. 


Arcadia Bluffs South Course  - CC: Ross course at FL minus the Ross. 


Lawsonia Links - Blessed to live under two hour's drive from Lawsonia.   Superior to my West Bend CC with it's 18 L and M holes and tree removal.  In my opinion, the best course in Wisconsin.
