Where would you play your last round?
« on: January 05, 2021, 02:11:01 AM »
Tom Doak's question from yesterday's thread is a great one, and to my mind captures the essence of greatness.

I would also ask, if you knew you had one round left (anyplace in the world), where would you want to play it?  This question may reveal a lot about your real priorities in evaluating courses.

I wrote a blog post about this like 15 years ago or whenever the Mayans said the world would end... I was planning on playing NGLA and Shinnecock in an interwoven 36 hole course till we went up in flames.

I’m not sure I’d be in any fit state to enjoy the round if I knew it was my last. So it’s probably about who with, not where.

In fact, I might want to not really enjoy it and play awfully. So that I’m quite happy to hang up my clubs. Do I get to live on or is the world going to end? That would make a difference.

I would play it at Yale which was the impetus for my fascination of mostly Golden Age courses close to forty years ago. Additionally I was introduced and able to play hundreds of rounds there with my father.

Ballyneal.  It's been my home now for a number of years.  Walking up 18 with the sun setting would be ideal.

That’s easy. RDGC! Improbable  - far from home.

More likely WSFGC.

If it's for the "whole experience," including the "hang" afterwards, etc.: Lakeside

Just for the golf course (of courses I've played): LACC North or Bandon Trails

Just for the golf course (of places I've never played): Cypress Point

Here are a few more choices when the question was asked in 2018.

An author's choice, also from 2018

From 2006

Guess I am a Doaker to the end.  If I had to play nearby it would be Pacific Dunes. Anywhere else Tara Iti.

Top 3 would be Sand Hills, Pacific Dunes and Prairie Dunes.

I'll have to go with places where I was a member and loved. The club, its membership, and memories are an important component.  It just might be Musgrove Mill in SC or Four Streams outside DC. I have spent many hours and days enjoying the course and club. Both clubs are golf only and away from any housing, are good courses and walkable.

Impeccable logic. Edgebrook in Chicago.

But if I had to pick based on what I think golf means for me independent of family and friends: Golspie or Kilspindie. Just pure fun in a beautiful setting.

These may be the same answers I give to Tom's question.

The top two candidates today are Stanford University GC and Ballyneal.  Stanford because that's where I'm from, and it is where my father played his last round.  I was born in the (old) university hospital, just a mile or so away.  The oak dotted foothills around Palo Alto mean home to me.  It's a darn nice golf course as well.

Ballyneal is much less realistic as a final round, since it is far from my current home in Oregon.  I've been there since the beginning, and done my small part to help build a pleasant environment for members and guests.  It's a darn nice golf course as well.

 ;D ???

Walked a few holes at Cypress, wow so beautiful. The fifth hole at Royal Portrush was closest thing to Brigadoon for golf. Gonna go to Cypress because never played it!

Paul,

My choice would be Ballybunion and after playing I would go to the Ballybunion castle where my mother had me sprinkle half her ashes with the other half being buried near the reservoir in Central Park where my mother used to run.

It would be a fitting end to my golf journey from Leewood Golf Club in Eastchester, NY where I fell in love with golf courses at about 2-3 years old.

There are two golf courses in their own world above all others to me: The Old Course and my home course in Dallas which remains a source of curiosity, fun and meaningful friendships. If it is summer: St. Andrews. If Fall, Spring or Winter, I will stay home.

My home course. Been a member for 20 years. Reasons:
The people who I have played with.
Friendships. They have have gone way beyond the golf course.
It’s the place where I have had some success.
Shot my lowest scores and had my hole in one there.

Other than the above, any course where I have played and met some of the members of this discussion group and   we played together again.

I'd choose a place I haven't played ... so Augusta, Pine Valley or Oakmont would be top of the list ...
