Harry and Laura moved to East Hendred in west Berkshire in 1917; the village was a hotbed of Catholicism, because the lords of the manor for 600 years, the Eyston family, had always remained Catholic. Laura's father David Dewar was an Anglican priest who went over to Rome after (now Saint) John Henry Newman had done so. The family was quite grand, and was very well connected in upper-class Catholic circles.
