I first saw PV walking the final round of the Crump Cup when my brother played the final against Sigel.

When i saw the approach to number 2 I just couldn’t believe it. The. I saw the green

I’m still amazed by it

I never saw 8 with the second green. But I thought it was amazing too

The quote from Henry Longhurst at two is that when he first saw the hole he said, "I don't know whether to photograph it or play it." From the tee it is a stunner.

Boy...what a question.

Archie has had #4 really high for years now, and he certainly knows the course better than anyone here. The approach shot really is about as cool as golf gets...from the top or the bottom.

I just disagree about the short cut he espouses. I don't think anyone intentionally aims down that very far right edge to the point that the new bunker(s) prevent that shot. I do believe Mark Chapin's experience of pure luck is more accurate for the thousands of people who missed right off that tee only to have the ball end up at the bottom of the hill in perfect position. If the trees were cleared over to the road, then 100% yes...but as is, this couldn't be an intentional line for the same player twice...

Leaving that debate to the side for a minute, this could well still be the best hole on the property. I would go with #2 personally for the exact reasons Pat Burke pointed to...except it wasn't my brother playing Sigel in the finals. It was Randy Sonnier...

Steve Lapper makes all great points about #15 and I just listed that as one of the greatest 5 holes on the planet...(could it be top 5 on the planet but not best on its own course???).

I've always had a great fondness for #16 as well and if you asked me which one hole I'd like to play there, #16 may be it.

Hmm...tough question.

The second hole, by far. It's only shortcoming is that it comes so early in the round that it is forgotten by the time you play the remaining 16.   The best green i have ever played.

Scene of what I think is probably the longest putt I ever hit. I hit a putt from the back left to the front of the green. We timed it and the ball was rolling for 29 seconds. That's a looooooooooooong time! Incredible green and I don't think I've seen anything like it anywhere else. Ran's review of PV on here talks about how you never really see the clover leaf shape of the third green. There are many things at PV that people don't seem to copy for some reason. 13 too, where you have to aim your approach shot out into the middle of nowhere. I couldn't do it - bailed out to the right every time. There's so much space out there and just nothing left. Then you have a devil of a chip down that green.

The first time I played 15 I probably made one of my best pars ever. Snapped tee shot into the trees, excellent chip out of the trees into the fairway. Well struck straight 3 wood, then stiffed a 5 iron.

On subsequent visits I’ve either been a victim of the front slope or 3 putted from long range.

I heard a story about him once...played a Crump Cup match against a guy I know really well.

TEP 1 putted 11 or 12 of the 16 holes the match lasted before shaking hands with his vanquished foe and saying “you really hung in there well, for a long time”...

Any chance your guy is a member of GM? TEP took me to dinner there and we sat next to some guy and his family. He waived at him and then turned to me and said "I made every putt I looked at against him once years ago--he probably thinks I'm a better putter than Ben Crenshaw".

He’s not...I suspect there are dozens of guys around Philadelphia that think Tommy was as good as Crenshaw on the greens. Putted 15 footers like falling out of bed.

Here's what went through my mind when having the privilege to play PV:

1 - "This is the best hole I've ever played"
2 - "Scratch that, this is."
3 - "The most magnificent par 3 I've played."
4 - "Tell me I'm OK a bit right off the tee."
5 - "Scratch that earlier par 3 remark, this is the most magnificent."
6 - "Probably not wise that I'm aiming this far right for my tee shot."
7 - "Gotta get over HHA ... phew ... but this third shot is no bargain. Best par 5 ever built."
8 - "Tight downhill lie to a tiered small green ... oh boy."
9 - "Please tell me there's fairway to the right."
10 - "No, I don't want to land in the DA, but what an experience if I did."
11 - "I seem to have a hanging lie wherever I land this tee shot."
12 - "Sure it's short, but this green seems to run away from me."
13 - "I just hit two of the best shots of my life, and I hope I have a decent putt for bogey."
14 - "Why is everyone yelling 'fore on the tee' ... I pulled it a bit left, but not much."
15 - "It can't be getting this narrow and uphill at once."
16 - "That water really is in play."
17 - "Missing this green would be no fun, or would it?"
18 - "Thank goodness this green is as large as it is ... I came in a bit hot on the approach."

A masterpiece for sure.

As with most Dan wimps out on choosing the best hole. I think he said “ the one I’m playing “.

While I agree with Mayday that this is a very soft way out of this question...they really are all spectacular, aren't they!

To me, the weakest is probably 14 simply because the green is least adventurous...and I could see people thinking it's their favorite because it's the most dramatic.

For me it’s more, “I think I may have played something akin to this on a number of other courses.” than any other hole at PV.

Can't really disagree although with some tree work that would change, no? I haven't been the in a few years and have heard they've done some tree work but I haven't heard about this area.

They’re all bloody marvellous of course, but for some reason my brain keeps returning to 17. There was something about it which felt very open yet enclosed, challenging yet fun, simple yet complex. At first sight it might appear a little too simple, maybe boring and compared to some of the other visual and physical onslaught it possibly is, but it’s just a wee charmer with great delight and much pleasurable excitement!
Is it the best hole out there? I don’t know, but it’s very stuck in my head!

Yes #14.  Downhill Par 3 forced carry over a pond.  On the tree work I don’t know either probably has been thinned out but not cleared out.

Marty 17 is a wonderful hole even better now that they have a back tee. Used to be you could slap almost anything in the fairway and have 125 yards to the green. The shot is pretty simple and the green is very receptive. Charming hole but doesn’t have any of the subtleties that would make it stand out in the panoply. My favorite hole for many years was #11 because it just linked perfectly and when caddying there was always a breeze.

It’s a great place , hard to imagine it was ever built there and architecture is off the hook.

When I was lucky enough to play this place, I walked away with two opinions. One - I'd never seen another golf course where I could see on every hole how you could make a ten. Two - that you could lift every hole off the golf course and drop it in anywhere else and it would be the standout hole of the course. I've played a good number more courses since then and I think I'd edge back from the standout hole, but I struggle to think of any hole at PV that would make any other golf course worse if you slotted it in there. I'm assuming here btw that it doesn't affect routing or flow.

I took a look back at the email I sent to Ran when I asked to be accepted here and I found out I said I thought 13 was the best hole. Side note - I suggested 11 was the weakest. I think 11 is the most normal hole. It doesn't stand out to me as much as the others do. On reflection, like I said earlier in this thread, I think 8 is the one though. So exacting, while so promising on the card. And if you do hit the green on the right level, you have a great birdie chance!

Honestly think this place deserves every accolade! There's nowhere better IMO
