If You're Bored This Time of Year......
« on: November 29, 2020, 05:08:19 PM »
I know many posters here and friends of mine that track all their golf.  I just completed a fun research project to see what architect's original courses I've played the most (no revisions counted).  My top 5 is:

  • Pete Dye - 18 Courses
  • Arthur Hills - 10
  • Jack Nicklaus - 9
  • Tom Fazio - 8
  • RTJ Sr. - 6
Lots of three to four courses played for Coore & Crenshaw, Ross (surprisingly), Doak, Langford/Moreau, Bendelow, Norman, DeVries, Griffiths, Stiles/Van Kleek, Smyers, Weiskpof, Joe Lee, Dick Nugent and Palmer/Seay.

Anyone else like to share?

Ken

I have played 37 of my own courses - everywhere except the Bay of Dreams (before it folded) and Memorial Park and St Patrick's (not yet).*

I wonder if I have played more by Ross or MacKenzie or Colt?  I will see if I can figure it out.

* I have also hit it around a few routings we never got to build:  in Madrid, in NZ, in Australia.  Those were cool.

Numbers are lower Mark?!?  I knew there were many of you guys who got around!

After spending 15 years in the golf business where travel and playing was limited to the same regional courses then 15 more years in jobs in the med device industry that again made travel challenging, my numbers are not surprisingly and woefully low.

On the other hand, these are some fine numbers gentlemen with an equally impressive demand in travel!

Tom Doak, my count for your courses is actually 4 as I missed counting Black Forest.  A few easy ones to hit for me were thwarted by extenuating circumstances.  I sat in the parking lot of Quail Crossing for a few hours after driving in for a tournament.  Never got our of the car.  We were suppose to play the Mashie this year at the Loop but....

My spreadsheet is not as easy to sort as I thought . . . it's mixed together with Ran's and Darius's and Masa's, and too many of the architect listings are multiple or first name first or some other thing.  I tried sorting through the big names and this is what I came up with for my own list:

Donald Ross  98 (47 played)
Jack Nicklaus 62  (21)
Tom Fazio 50  (27)
Pete Dye  47  (31)
Alister MacKenzie  35  (14)  **
A.W. Tillinghast  25  (10)
Seth Raynor  22  (11)  - not including another 8 that are "Macdonald"

**  I am sure the MacKenzie count is very short, because places like Lahinch and Kingston Heath and Palmetto have another designer listed before him for the original layout

I'm a relative lightweight, having only played 117 courses in the ten years I've been playing golf.

28 of those however, are Alister MacKenzie designs.

I suspect Braid comes next. It's difficult to play golf in the UK and not rack up a lot of Braid courses!

As always, I need to get out more. Especially to some Tillinghast and Mackenzie efforts. But I doubt anyone else here has played two Harold England designs, so I've got that going for me. There's probably somebody who's played more Blankenships than I have though.

I track all the courses I have played but I have no idea how many of each different architect I have seen.  I am impressed you guys who posted know this as it would take me days to sort this all out.  I am luckily I am not that bored right now  ;D

47 – Donald Ross
23 – Tom Fazio, Pete Dye
22 – Jack Nicklaus
19 – RTJ Sr
16 – AW Tillinghast
15 – Michael Hurdzan
12 – Seth Raynor, Coore & Crenshaw
9 – Tom Doak, Old Tom Morris, RTJ Jr, Arthur Hills, Arnold Palmer
8 – Gil Hanse
7 – William Bell, Willie Park Jr
6 – Perry Maxwell, Devereux Emmet, Rees Jones, Dick Wilson, Jeff Brauer
5 – CB MacDonald, James Braid, Mike Strantz, Willard Byrd, Jack Kidwell, Davis Love III, Ellis Maples, Tom Jackson, Gary Player
4 – William Flynn, Harry Colt, Francis Duane, Ted Robinson, David Rainville
3 – Alistair MacKenzie, George Thomas, David McLay Kidd, CH Alison, Langford & Moreau, Stiles & Van Kleek, Russell Breedon, Dan Maples, Bobby Weed, Johnny Miller, Schmidt & Curley, Barry Serafin, Gene Hamm, Clyde Johnston, Bob Cupp, George Cobb, David Gordon

Of course, attribution can be tricky for certain courses, especially older courses that have been touched by many over the years.  I would say my list above is best efforts for certain courses/architects, as to who gets primary credit.  Particularly in the UK, there are many that have some combination of Old Tom Morris, Harry Colt, James Braid, Willie Park Jr, as well as a few others.

Trying to piece this together and found that the winner in the clubhouse by a wide margin is...

William & David Gordon - 19 courses with at least 9+ holes accounted for

Rest of list:

Ault/Clark - 11
Tillinghast - 9
Flynn - 6
Ross - 6
Blaukovitch - 5
Alec Findlay - 5
Maurice McCarthy - 4

A ton of other guy's stuff that I've played between 1 and three different courses. I'm guessing it's obvious that I have been in the Eastern half of PA for the most part.

I'm amazed that you guys can actually tally them up like that.  I don't know how long it would take me to search my memory banks and figure it out, especially with someone like Ross.

It's really not that difficult if you color code your pins.

I decided to reorganize my pinned map of where I have played by color coating by architect. So far I have the following:

Nicklaus - Gold
Player - Black
Tiger - Red
Coore & Crenshaw - Green
Bauer - Plaid

The above are obvious. Any others out there before I just have to make stuff up?

Mark,

I’m not picking on Robert White.  I have great respect for Robert White’s work. I just thought their names were obvious color code choices for John’s map.

Maybe not as obvious as I thought?
