I think Arnold Palmer did use Pennzoil in that tractor at Latrobe, didn’t use the Palmer-branded clubs that Sears used to sell, and never much pretended that he was the one actually designing the hundreds of golf courses that bear his name. It was a simpler (and yet maybe a more sophisticated) time back then: he said to us ‘This is how I make most of my money, because I don’t win much of it on the golf course anymore’, and we in turn said to him ‘We know that, and we don’t mind a bit — you’re Arnold Palmer, and this is the way we show that we love you’.
