Redan Par 3 Holes - 2020 Catalog

We had to draw a line and focus on only the Par 3 Redan holes still found in the world. Yes for the OCD we will be not only including, but identifying the reverse Redan holes!!! Denoted with an R after the hole number. Again will site the Fried Egg as a reference to start us off. So where are they at?

I'm only including holes in existence and the original architect, unless the Redan was made new by the new GCA. Restoring a Redan isn't listed. So while we want to note restoration work by some of our active friends and colleagues that is the bar to give credit on this thread.

Maybe this is sacrilegious to say, but I don't get why the 13th at Yale is considered a Redan ... other than the fact that it was designed by Raynor and is named "Redan." I've played a bunch of Redan holes over the years — most notably the 15th at North Berwick and the 7th at Shinnecock — and Yale is nothing at all like those. I think the 13th at Yale is a nice hole, but it has none of the playing characteristics of the other redan's I've seen.

I'd agree with this. The layout may be redan-esq, but the severe downhill nature of the hole means it doesn't have the options in a way that some of the other great redans do.

16 at Brookville on LI is a reverse one I think. Westhampton has one at somewhere around 7. 8ish at Knollwood in Westchester I think might be one as well (reverse). I played it in miserable weather and wasn't really paying a lot of attention to my surrounds.

If the 13th at Yale is a Redan, then I expect this list to be about 5,000 holes long.


There have been many, many discussions on the defining characteristics of a Redan. But for me it’s simple:


Angled green where you can reach a back pin position in one of two ways: Fly directly at it over a bunker OR play out wide, land ball short and feed it down on the front to back slope.


Without all of these features, you are describing a hole so common it is not worthy of being given a name.


Yale is fantastic by the way. But a drop-shot Redan just cannot really exist.

Conceptually, I agree.  It just doesn't work...but, what about the 7th at Sleepy Hollow?  It is a brilliant hole, and it somehow works.  Just a very rare exception, I guess?

Redan means fortification. Downhill provides no defense. I’m glad to see others agreeing that Yale’s is not a Redan hole.
